Dayaben became widely recognized following the launch of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. Portrayed by Disha Vakani, the character also showcased a distinctive garba style that was adored by viewers. In a conversation with Screen, creator Asit Modi disclosed that the character's traits included improvisations made by Disha.

On casting Disha as Dayaben

Reflecting on the moment the creators acknowledged that Disha was the ideal selection for the role, Asit mentioned, “Disha Vakani is a remarkably talented actress. So when we described the character to her, our briefing indicated that she is a very innocent woman who cares for her husband, her father-in-law, and her life is centered around her son. Whenever she experiences shock, her response is always ‘Hey Ma, Mataji! ’, which is a common reaction among the people of Gujarat. During her audition, we were all gathered together, and when she performed the role, we simply loved it. The inspiration for Dayaben calling Jethalal from the balcony comes from my mother. Whenever my father would leave for work and forget something, my mother would chase after him, calling out to him. We incorporated that innocence into her character; her dancing garba was added subsequently. ”

‘Daya Bhabhi’s style of garba was her improvisation’

“During the first episode, we considered incorporating garba when Bapuji sneezed and his hip stiffened, which is when we decided to see if garba could help relieve his stiffness. That’s how the enthusiasm for performing garba began. Daya Bhabhi’s garba style was a result of her own improvisation. While filming, we all strive to elevate what is presented in the script,” he further explained.

Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has been on air since July 28, 2008. Disha left the series a few years ago, only to make a brief return in 2020. Reports surfaced in 2022 indicating that Disha faced throat issues due to Dayaben's distinctive voice used on the show.
