For nearly twenty years, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has been one of the most beloved programs on Indian television, yet it has not been without its controversies. In recent years, numerous cast members have departed from the show, and several have accused the producers, including Asit Modi, of exhibiting 'toxic' behavior. In a recent interview, Modi responded to these claims.
Asit Modi on Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah's controversies
In a recent interview with Screen, Asit Modi addressed his feelings regarding actors who leave the show and subsequently voice their criticisms. He stated, “I have never distanced myself from the actors. If any issues arise, they are always welcome to reach out to me. I have consistently prioritized the show and have never sought personal benefits. While such situations do upset me, they are simply a part of life.”
The producer further expressed that he does not intend to respond to numerous allegations and acknowledged the contributions of the dissatisfied actors to the show's success. He remarked, “The actors who have departed have made negative comments about me, and that’s acceptable. I won’t retaliate. They have been part of my show and contributed to the success of TMKOC. Although I have taken the lead, the show's popularity is a result of everyone's hard work. I could not have achieved this alone. We function like a train; some compartments may derail, but the train keeps moving forward. I do feel saddened, yet I choose to forgive them, as holding onto resentment would prevent me from being happy and from making others laugh.”
The many controversies of TMKOC
Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has been broadcast on Sony SAB since 2008 and is currently available for streaming on SonyLIV. In 2020, following Neha Mehta's departure from the series, she claimed that 'discipline and decorum were not upheld on set.' Two years later, she alleged that the production team failed to settle her payments, a claim that the production company refuted. Since then, other cast members, including Shailesh Lodha and Palak Sidhwani, have also leveled accusations of exploitation against the producers. In 2023, Jennifer Mistry Bansiwal, who left the show, accused Modi of sexual harassment, while Monika Bhadoriya later that year alleged that both Modi and project head Sohail Ramani fostered a hostile work environment.
