The popular crime series CID is currently making headlines due to an unexpected plot twist. ACP Pradyuman, the main character since the show's inception in 1998, has reportedly been killed off in a recent episode. While this shocking development is creating a stir among fans, the series is also facing controversy. A recent episode has been criticized for including content that appears to lack originality. An artist has taken to Instagram to point out that the show incorporated his YouTube videos to depict graffiti featured in the episode.

CID episode features content from YouTube video

The current storyline in CID involves the team confronting the criminal mastermind Barbosa (Tigmanshu Dhulia), who is responsible for the bombing that resulted in the death of ACP Pradyuman (Shivaji Satam). The episode, titled "The Aftermath," begins with the ACP's demise and follows the team, including Daya and Abhijeet, as they investigate a series of enigmatic graffiti appearing throughout Mumbai. This graffiti features depictions of Jared Leto's Joker and Marvel's The Incredible Hulk.

On Monday, Mumbai-based graffiti artist Mooz Graffiti took to Instagram to share a clip from the show, highlighting that CID not only utilized his artwork but also appropriated images from YouTube videos, constituting copyright infringement.

The video starts with a scene from CID, followed by Mooz presenting his original creations. He then addresses the camera in Hindi, stating, “At first, I was thrilled because we have all grown up watching CID, and having my artwork included is an honor. However, it's not just my work; Zake, Elmart, and many others have also been featured. The amusing part is that instead of going out to film the actual artwork or hiring someone to capture the vandalism, you opted to take it from a YouTube video. I found that quite humorous.”

Mooz commented on the video, stating, "Barbosa has taken all the credit!" I was surprised to wake up to this! The CID featured our artworks in their latest episode titled 'The Aftermath,' where the graffiti appears to have been sourced from YouTube videos. It's quite amusing!

The internet reacts

In the comments section, numerous users highlighted the intriguing decision by the creators of CID to source graffiti from YouTube, despite the fact that the original artwork exists in public spaces. Many suggested that the artist should consider legal action against both the creators and the channel. One user commented, "Bro, SUE THEM! If we use their content, they immediately issue copyright strikes. This is a great opportunity to teach them a lesson." Another comment noted the irony of a program centered around law enforcement engaging in content appropriation, stating, "Wow! I just learned that the CID team can commit crimes too."

CID was developed by BP Singh, who also produces the show alongside Pradeep Uppoor. It is broadcast on Sony TV and is available for streaming on SonyLIV and Netflix. As of now, neither the creators nor the channel have responded to the controversy.
