iOS 18.4: More Default App Options for a Personalized iPhone
2 days ago | 5 Views
Apple has made notable advancements in enhancing customization options on the iPhone with the release of new default app settings in iOS 18.4. This update broadens the categories available for setting default applications, tailored to the user's geographical location.
In earlier updates, such as iOS 18.2, Apple streamlined the procedure for altering default apps. These applications automatically perform specific functions across the device. For example, when a user clicks on a phone number found on a webpage, the Phone app is triggered to initiate the call. However, with iOS 18.4, users can now designate a preferred app for various tasks, including making calls. This allows for third-party applications like WhatsApp to be set as the default for phone calls.
New Categories for Translation and Navigation
This latest update introduces two significant features based on users' locations. The first, Translation, is now accessible worldwide, enabling users to substitute Apple's default Translate app with third-party options such as Google Translate. This provides users with the flexibility to choose their preferred translation services.
Additionally, within the European Union, a new category called Navigation has been added. This feature permits users to switch their default mapping application from Apple Maps to alternatives like Google Maps or Waze. Although this functionality is exclusive to the EU, it represents a substantial advancement in empowering users to manage their navigation preferences more effectively.
How to Change Default Apps
These updates are part of a larger effort to enhance user control over the functionality of their iPhones. Users now have the ability to personalize their default applications across several categories, including Email, Messaging, Calling, and more. For instance, by designating Waze as the default navigation app, any location shared through messages will automatically open in Waze rather than Apple Maps.
To modify default applications in iOS 18.4, users should go to Settings, select Apps, and then choose Default Apps. In the United States, the available categories for default settings encompass Email, Messaging, Calling, Call Filtering, Browser, Translation, Passwords & Codes, Contactless Apps, and Keyboards. Additionally, users in the European Union will find the Navigation category included.
With the release of iOS 18.4, Apple reinforces its commitment to providing users with enhanced customization and personalization options. Will you be adjusting your default apps? We invite you to share your opinions in the comments section.
