WhatsApp Pay Now Open to All Indian Users: Here's How to Get Started

WhatsApp Pay, a payment service powered by UPI, has officially broadened its accessibility to all users in India. Previously, the service faced limitations due to a cap on user numbers set by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), but this restriction has now been removed. As a result, WhatsApp Pay is now available for use by any individual in India following the NPCI's easing of its regulations.

For the past two years, WhatsApp Pay was limited to a user base of 100 million. The NPCI implemented this cap to maintain the service's security and ensure its efficient operation. However, with the recent changes, WhatsApp Pay can now provide UPI services to the entire Indian user base.

The NPCI announced in a press release, "We are pleased to inform you that WhatsApp Pay can now extend UPI services to all its users in India." This development enables WhatsApp users to send and receive funds directly through the application, offering a convenience comparable to other UPI services. WhatsApp Pay facilitates seamless transactions, allowing users to send money requests or transfer funds to contacts without leaving the app, similar to other UPI-enabled platforms such as Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm.

In a related update, the NPCI has postponed its initiative to enforce a 30 per cent market share limit on UPI service providers, providing relief to companies like PhonePe, which currently commands over 47 per cent of the market. The new implementation deadline for this cap is now set for December 2026, allowing companies additional time to adjust to the forthcoming regulations.
