What the TikTok Ban in India Teaches Us About Potential U.S. Restrictions

TikTok in the United States may encounter a situation similar to that of India in 2020, when the Indian government imposed a ban on the application, citing national security issues related to its ownership. Given that TikTok is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese corporation, there is a looming possibility of a ban in the US later this month. This potential action would be by the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. Should this legislation be implemented, app distribution platforms such as the Google Play Store and Apple App Store would be restricted from hosting or offering services like TikTok.

If the TikTok ban does go into effect, what would it mean for American users?

Indians have previously encountered a similar situation. In 2020, following the ban of TikTok in India, users attempting to access the TikTok website were met with a notification that read:

“Dear Users,

On June 29, 2020, the Government of India made the decision to block 59 applications, including TikTok. We are currently in the process of adhering to the Government of India's directive and are also collaborating with the government to gain a clearer understanding of the matter and to explore potential actions.

The privacy and security of all our users in India remain our highest priority.

TikTok India Team.”

What was the outcome of the application? The TikTok team rendered the app inoperable in compliance with the ban, and it was subsequently removed from both the Google Play Store and the Apple Store. Presently, searching for TikTok yields results for alternatives such as Moj, Josh, and Instagram.

Reports indicate that in the United States, users who have already installed TikTok on their devices may continue to use the application for a limited time. However, in the absence of updates or access to app stores, the app is anticipated to become unusable in the future.

Is there a way to access TikTok after a ban? And are there any alternatives?

Platforms would technically be restricted from distributing TikTok; however, it would not be illegal for users to access the application. Users may seek alternative methods, such as downloading APK files and utilizing a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to conceal their location. Nevertheless, these approaches involve several steps and carry considerable risks, including potential security vulnerabilities.

Are there substitutes for TikTok? In 2020, the choices for short-form video platforms were quite limited. However, by 2025, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts have gained significant popularity and serve as effective alternatives to TikTok. If the ban is implemented, American users will still have access to these platforms for their short-form video content.

Instagram's reach way key after the ban in India, and the same may apply to the US, too

Following the prohibition of TikTok, Instagram Reels has emerged as the leading platform for short-form video content in India. Numerous creators have shifted their focus to Instagram, leveraging the platform to gain recognition, influence audiences, and generate income through the creation of captivating short videos.

Had TikTok not been banned, it likely would have maintained its position of dominance. Nevertheless, Instagram's vast user base has enabled it to effectively promote and popularize Reels, establishing it as one of the largest—if not the largest—platforms for short-form video content in India.

It would not be unexpected for Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts to similarly gain prominence in the United States for short-form content, particularly given that both platforms are owned by American companies.
