xAI has launched the Grok AI chatbot as a standalone application for iOS in the United States, representing a notable advancement for the platform. Currently in its beta stage, this app provides the same functionalities as the version integrated within X. Users can obtain real-time information, pose inquiries, and create images through the app, mirroring the features available in the chatbot on X.

Testing for the Grok app on iOS commenced in December across various countries, although information regarding an Android version remains uncertain. Initially, access to Grok was restricted to X Premium subscribers; however, the service has now been made available to all users, positioning it alongside other widely used free AI chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, and Google's Gemini.

The introduction of the Grok app coincides with xAI's ongoing initiatives to establish additional platforms, including a dedicated website for Grok, which is still labelled with a "coming soon" notice. Furthermore, the company's fundraising activities have been significant, with xAI raising $6 billion in June and announcing another funding round, supported by investors like Nvidia and AMD.

Grok iOS app: User Experience and Features

Upon the installation of the Grok iOS application, users are welcomed by a new chat interface that facilitates interaction with the AI. The application accommodates a range of functionalities, including image generation, essay writing, web searching, and obtaining live updates from X. In contrast to the web version, users are not required to log in to access these features. Nevertheless, the iOS version provides the option to sign in using either an X account or an Apple account. Utilizing an X account enhances personalization and enables users to synchronize their chats across multiple devices.

The application operates on the Grok 2 AI model, which is also available in both free and premium versions on the web. Initial testing indicated no significant issues with latency, bugs, or glitches, implying a seamless user experience. It is worth noting that the "Fun mode" feature, potentially exclusive to X Premium subscribers, was not present in the iOS application version.
