Chinese AI startup DeepSeek has significantly influenced the technology sector, causing fluctuations in stock markets and resulting in substantial losses in market capitalisation for companies such as Nvidia. This situation has led notable individuals, including Sam Altman, to recognize its ramifications. To date, there have been various developments both supporting and opposing DeepSeek, including an alleged assertion by Microsoft and OpenAI that members of DeepSeek may have unlawfully acquired data to assist in the development of their AI models. Currently, in light of the scrutiny and national security issues prevalent in the United States, the U.S. Navy has directed all personnel to refrain from utilizing DeepSeek AI services, citing that the technology is fundamentally associated with China, as reported by CNBC.
What U.S. Navy Said About DeepSeek And Why Is The West Worried
According to a recent report by CNBC, an email from the U.S. Navy indicated that DeepSeek AI should not be utilized in any form due to potential security and ethical issues linked to its Chinese origins. This email has been verified as genuine by the U.S. Navy.
The correspondence reportedly advised that DeepSeek should not be employed “for any work-related tasks or personal use.” Additionally, recipients were instructed to “avoid downloading, installing, or using the DeepSeek model in any capacity.”
DeepSeek is a direct rival to ChatGPT and Google Gemini. Although its development reportedly cost only $5–6 million, DeepSeek's AI models are perceived as a significant challenge to OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and other prominent AI systems.
The central theme here is that while Western nations invested billions in the development of generative AI, China has achieved comparable outcomes at a significantly lower cost. This situation has caused unease in U.S. stock markets, particularly impacting companies such as Nvidia.
Since its launch, DeepSeek has ascended to the top of Apple's App Store, even surpassing ChatGPT in terms of downloads.
U.S. President Donald Trump Says DeepSeek Is A ‘Wake-Up' Call
Concerns regarding DeepSeek extend beyond the U.S. Navy. Recently, U.S. President Donald Trump has voiced his apprehensions about the AI startup. According to NBC News, Trump remarked, “The introduction of DeepSeek AI by a Chinese firm should serve as a wake-up call for our industries, emphasizing the necessity for us to concentrate intently on competition.”
He further stated that, in general, DeepSeek represents a beneficial advancement in the field of artificial intelligence, as it allows for reduced expenditure while aiming to achieve comparable solutions.
