Revolutionizing Connectivity: Jio, Airtel, and BSNL Users Can Now Make Calls on Any Network
1 month ago | 5 Views
In a significant development aimed at enhancing connectivity for mobile users, the Department of Telecom (DoT) has launched a new initiative that enables subscribers of Jio, Airtel, and BSNL to make calls and utilize 4G services across any telecom network. The Intra Circle Roaming (ICR) service, implemented throughout the country's telecom infrastructure and supported by the Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN), is designed to address connectivity challenges, particularly in rural and remote regions.
Seamless Connectivity Across Networks
Telecom customers previously had access to services solely through towers managed by their designated telecom service provider (TSP). However, with the introduction of the ICR facility, customers of Jio, Airtel, and BSNL can now utilize DBN-funded towers for uninterrupted connectivity, even when their own network towers are out of range. This service is part of a broader set of telecom initiatives introduced by Union Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia, which also includes the Sanchar Sathi mobile application and the National Broadband Mission 2.0.
This advancement enables users to make calls and utilize 4G services via the DBN-supported towers, thereby reducing the necessity for telecom companies to establish their towers in every location. The initiative aims to assist TSPs in lowering operational expenses while ensuring that their customers, including those in remote areas, receive consistent services. According to data from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), this program will extend 4G coverage through 27,000 DBN-funded towers to over 35,400 villages throughout India.
A Collaborative Effort to Improve Rural Connectivity
The importance of the ICR facility was underscored by Scindia, who highlighted its potential to enhance the lives of rural communities by allowing users to select from various networks for improved service quality. He pointed out that the partnership among the three leading telecom operators—BSNL, Airtel, and Jio—utilizes shared infrastructure at sites funded by DBN, which is expected to significantly enhance the telecommunications experience for millions of users.
DBN, which was established under the Telecommunications Act of 2023, is a government initiative aimed at improving connectivity and affordability in areas that are often overlooked. Although the ICR service represents a substantial advancement in network accessibility, users are presently limited to the telecom service provider responsible for the tower installation with DBN's backing. Nevertheless, there is potential for broader access as additional sites are developed under this program.
