Microsoft Co-Founder Claims Android Shielded Mobile Innovation, Labels Gates' Decision as a Critical Error

Rich Miner, co-founder of Android, has responded to Bill Gates' recent acknowledgement of his regret over missing opportunities in the mobile phone sector, which Gates characterized as “the greatest mistake of all time.” Miner highlighted his significant contribution to the development of Android, emphasizing that it was aimed at thwarting Microsoft's potential to monopolize the mobile market as it had with the personal computer industry. He asserted that such dominance could have hindered innovation within the mobile arena.

Here's What Rich Miner Said

In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Miner remarked, "I was instrumental in the creation of Android to prevent Microsoft from exerting control over mobile devices as they did with personal computers, which stifled innovation. Therefore, it is amusing to hear Gates lament about losing the mobile market to Android."

Miner further detailed his contributions, noting that he assisted Microsoft in launching its inaugural Windows Mobile phone in 2002. He stated:

"I aided Orange in the introduction of the first Windows Mobile phone in 2002, the SPV (Orange SPV—the first commercially available Microsoft Windows-powered device). I was concerned that Microsoft might dominate the mobile sector in the same manner they did with PCs, and I desired a more open alternative. So, my apologies, Bill, but you bear more responsibility for the loss of that $400 billion than you may realize."

Miner's remarks convey a clear message: had Microsoft achieved dominance in the mobile market, it could have significantly hindered innovation within the sector. The development of Android provided an open platform that fundamentally transformed the mobile industry.

Consider the alternative scenario: without Android, the mobile market might have been monopolized by Apple and Microsoft as the only major players, resulting in a markedly different ecosystem.

Bill Gates' Big Revelation During A Recent Interview

Miner's remarks follow Bill Gates' interview with Julia Hartz. In this conversation, Gates stated, “The greatest mistake of all time is the mismanagement I engaged in that caused Microsoft not to be what Android is.”

Microsoft was notably tardy in entering the mobile market. Apple introduced its iOS platform in 2007 with the debut of the first iPhone, while Android emerged in 2008 after Google's acquisition. In contrast, Microsoft did not release its initial version of Windows Phone OS, known as Windows Phone 7, until 2010—by which point the market had already been predominantly dominated by Apple and Google.
