Meta has introduced its Instagram Teen Accounts in India, incorporating a variety of safety features intended to foster a secure atmosphere for younger users. The application now offers enhanced tools for parents to oversee their teenagers' activities and regulate their screen time.

As part of this new initiative, parents are empowered to track their children's recent contacts, establish daily screen time limits, and limit app usage during specific hours. These strategies are designed to ensure the safety of teenagers while they engage with the platform.

Meta guarantees that children are automatically assigned to the most secure settings, which provide an age-appropriate experience on Instagram.

“Prioritizing a safer digital environment is our commitment. The introduction of Instagram Teen Accounts in India bolsters protections, improves content controls, and aids parents in managing their children's online activities,” stated Natasha Jog, Director of Public Policy India, Instagram.

Key features of the new setup include:

  • Private Accounts: Accounts belonging to teenagers are configured to private by default, which necessitates approval for new followers. Individuals who do not follow them are unable to view or engage with their content. This setting applies to users under the age of 16 and to those under 18 at the time of their initial registration.
  • Messaging Controls: Teen users will only receive messages from accounts they follow or from individuals with whom they are already connected, thereby minimizing interactions with unfamiliar users.
  • Sensitive Content Limits: Access to sensitive content, such as violent imagery or advertisements for cosmetic procedures, will be limited for teenagers, especially within the Explore and Reels sections of the platform.
  • Tagging Restrictions: Teenagers can only be tagged or mentioned by accounts they follow. Additionally, the "Hidden Words" feature is enabled by default to filter out inappropriate language in comments and messages.
  • Usage Time Management: The application will prompt teenagers to take a break after one hour of usage, promoting healthier screen time habits.
  • Sleep Mode: Instagram will automatically activate sleep mode from 10 PM to 7 AM, which will prevent notifications and send automatic replies to messages during this timeframe.

Parents also have several supervision tools, including:

Monitoring Interactions: Parents can see a list of recent contacts without needing to access the content of messages.

Daily Usage Limits: Parents can establish daily usage restrictions, which will lock the application once the designated time has elapsed.

Scheduled Access Controls: Parents can restrict Instagram usage during certain hours, such as overnight, using an easy toggle switch.

These initiatives are designed to assist parents in overseeing their children's online activities while fostering a safer environment for teenagers on Instagram.
