Just in Time for Festivities: Google TV Introduces Over 170 Free Channels

Google TV has notably enhanced its selection of free channels, now providing over 170 live-streaming options just in time for the holiday season. This achievement represents a significant development, following the service's earlier milestone of surpassing 150 channels this year.
The Google TV Freeplay feature enables users to enjoy free, ad-supported live channels on the latest Google TV devices; however, it is currently limited to users in the United States. Freeplay initially launched with approximately 80 channels, and throughout 2024, the platform has consistently broadened its channel offerings.
As of November, the total number of channels available through Freeplay has approached 160, with Google TV recently adding more than a dozen additional channels. These new offerings include a diverse range of holiday-themed content, such as Designated Survivor and The Great Christmas Light Fight, among other recent additions.
- Best of Dr. Phil
- Xumo Free Holiday Movie Channel
- Xumo Free Holiday Classics
- Xumo Christian Christmas
- Continuum
- Z Nation
- The Design Network
- Filmrise: Classic TV
- UFC
- Unbeaten
- Big 12 Studios
- Waypoint TV
- PursuitUP
In addition to these, several Stingray music channels have been updated to offer festive tunes for the holiday season:
- Stingray Greatest Holiday Hits
- Stingray Soul Storm Christmas
- Stingray Hot Country Christmas
A report from 9to5Google indicates that the recent additions have increased the total number of available channels to 171. It is important to note that some of these channels, especially those dedicated to holiday programming, may only be accessible for a limited duration. Concurrently, Google has removed Motortrend Fast TV from its offerings, suggesting that content updates will persist throughout 2025.
In addition to Freeplay, users can enjoy over 1,100 extra free channels through Google's collaborations with platforms such as Plex, PlutoTV, and others. However, accessing these channels necessitates the download of additional applications.
Notwithstanding these enhancements, the revised Freeplay app remains unavailable on numerous devices following a rollback in November due to stability issues, with the exception of the Google TV Streamer.
