Google has commenced the rollout of the Identity Check feature for its Pixel smartphones. Initially announced last week, this feature is now becoming broadly accessible for devices operating on Android 15.

The Identity Check feature significantly enhances security for compatible devices by necessitating users to confirm their identity through biometric data when attempting to access certain resources, particularly when they are outside their established trusted locations. When this feature is enabled, users have the option to designate one or more trusted locations where biometric authentication is not required. However, if users venture beyond these trusted areas, they will be required to authenticate using their biometrics to gain access to essential settings and features, including device settings, account management, Passkeys, or modifications to PIN or biometric data.

List of Features Requiring Biometric Verification

Google has released a compilation of features and resources that necessitate biometric verification when users operate outside of designated trusted locations. These actions encompass the addition or removal of Google accounts, the configuration of a new device, the deactivation of Identity Check, alterations to Theft Protection settings, the disabling of Find My Device, executing a factory reset, updating biometric information, and retrieving passwords or Passkeys via Google Password Manager.

This functionality enhances Google's comprehensive Theft Protection suite, which comprises tools such as Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock, thereby reinforcing the security protocols accessible to Android users.

How to Enable the Identity Check Feature

For Google Pixel users looking to enable the Identity Check feature, the process is straightforward. Users must first ensure their devices are updated to the latest version of Android OS. After that, they can follow these steps:

1. Open the Settings app on the Pixel device.
2. Tap on the Google option.
3. Select All Services and then tap Theft Protection.
4. Tap the Identity Check option.
5. Sign in to the Google account, then add a lock screen and biometric data.
6. Set up trusted places.
7. Tap Done to complete the setup.

The rollout of the Identity Check feature for Pixel smartphones running Android 15 is already underway. Samsung devices running One UI 7 will receive the feature in the coming weeks, while other Android devices will get it later this year.
