Google has introduced an upgrade to its AI detection features in Google Photos by incorporating its SynthID technology. Beginning this week, images modified using the Reimagine function within Magic Editor will include an invisible watermark, which assists users in identifying AI alterations.

As AI-driven image editing tools advance, it has become increasingly difficult to differentiate between original and AI-modified images. This initiative is part of Google's commitment to enhancing transparency in AI-generated media.

What is SynthID?

SynthID is a watermarking solution created by Google DeepMind, intended to embed an invisible marker within AI-generated content, including images, videos, audio, and text, without compromising quality. This watermark remains detectable even after standard image alterations such as resizing, cropping, or compression, ensuring that AI modifications can still be recognized post-editing.

Implementation in Google Photos

Google first integrated SynthID into its AI-based text-to-image models, Imagen 2 and Imagen 3. The technology was subsequently extended to ImageFX for AI-generated images and Veo for video production. Now, users of Google Photos will find it applied to images edited with the Reimagine feature in Magic Editor.

Users can check if an image contains AI-generated components by utilizing the "About this image" tool available in Google Search and Chrome. This feature offers information regarding an image's online presence, metadata, and SynthID detection status.

Limitations of the Watermark

Although SynthID improves transparency regarding AI content, it does not ensure the detection of every modification. Minor adjustments, such as changing the color of a small object, may remain undetected. Nevertheless, this technology bolsters efforts to distinguish between conventional and AI-edited media.

Reimagine, which was introduced in 2024, facilitates comprehensive AI-driven alterations in Google Photos. As digital editing technologies progress, the necessity for standardized techniques to recognize AI-generated content is becoming increasingly evident. Digital watermarking represents one potential solution, promoting responsible AI utilization; however, further strategies may be necessary to achieve complete transparency.
