Google Messages is developing a new functionality that may enable users to initiate video calls via WhatsApp directly from the application. At present, this feature is not yet active, but it has been discovered within the code of the Google Messages app. It seems to activate in instances where Google Meet is not present on the user's device. This enhancement could simplify the video-calling experience for users of Google's messaging platform.

Feature Spotted in App Code

A recent article from Android Authority indicates that the integration may allow users to start WhatsApp video calls directly from Google Messages. This functionality was identified in version 20250131 of the application, where a flag for the feature was located, although it has not yet been made available to users. Screenshots provided by the publication imply that a notification to utilize WhatsApp for video calling emerges when users select the video call icon within a conversation. It is important to note that this notification is triggered only if the user does not have Google Meet installed.

How the Feature May Work

Currently, Google Messages facilitates video calls exclusively through Google Meet. In instances where Meet is not installed, the application prompts users to download it in order to proceed. The forthcoming feature intends to eliminate this requirement, enabling users to initiate video calls via WhatsApp without exiting the Google Messages interface. Rather than redirecting users to WhatsApp, the video call interface would launch in full-screen mode directly within Google Messages.

This feature appears to be tailored for individual conversations, as reports indicate that group video calls will continue to depend on Google Meet. Furthermore, if the recipient does not have WhatsApp installed, Google Messages will not present the option for a WhatsApp video call.

It is crucial to highlight that Google has yet to officially verify this feature, and the ultimate implementation may vary from the current observations.
