Elon Musk's enterprise, xAI, has shed light on a forthcoming feature for its AI-driven chatbot, Grok, referred to as "Unhinged Mode." This feature, initially hinted at last April, is anticipated to provide responses that may be considered objectionable or offensive, as detailed on an updated FAQ section of xAI's website. Reports suggest that this mode will aim to produce content reminiscent of an amateur stand-up comedian who is still honing their craft. However, the feature has yet to be activated, and efforts to locate it within the Grok web interface have been unsuccessful.

The launch of Unhinged Mode may reflect Musk's initial aspirations for Grok. Upon its debut two years ago, Musk characterized the chatbot as edgy, unfiltered, and prepared to tackle controversial topics that other AI systems tend to avoid. While Grok has fulfilled some of these expectations by generating vulgar content when prompted, it still adheres to certain boundaries. In terms of political discourse, Grok's responses have shown a left-leaning bias, particularly regarding matters such as transgender rights and diversity, as reported by Tech Crunch.

Musk's Advocacy for an Impartial Artificial Intelligence

Musk has linked these tendencies to the training data of Grok, which is derived from publicly available web pages, asserting that the content reflects certain "woke" biases. He has committed to guiding Grok towards a more politically neutral position, citing the pervasive nature of "woke nonsense" online. This perspective has found support among Musk and his allies, including David Sacks, who have criticized other AI platforms, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, for purportedly suppressing conservative perspectives.

Grok application for iOS

In conjunction with the Unhinged Mode, xAI is currently evaluating a new independent iOS application for Grok, which was formerly exclusive to X users. This application is now operational in multiple countries and provides users with real-time data retrieval from the web and X, in addition to functionalities such as text summarization, question-and-answer capabilities, and image generation based on text prompts. Furthermore, xAI is in the process of launching a dedicated website, Grok.com, aimed at broadening access to the chatbot. At present, the website displays a "coming soon" notification for individuals logging in with an xAI account.
