Conversely, Yann LeCun from Meta has warned against interpreting DeepSeek's achievements as an indication that China has overtaken the United States in the field of AI. Instead, he views it as a demonstration of how open-source models can surpass proprietary alternatives.

DeepSeek's achievements highlight a significant transformation in China's position within the global AI landscape. In a July 2024 interview with 36kr.com, CEO Liang Wenfeng asserted that China is evolving beyond the perception of merely adopting innovations from the United States. He noted that as China's economy expands, the nation is set to emerge as a leader in innovation, rather than depending on external contributions.

Liang pointed out that the development of DeepSeek's earlier models, such as V2, was entirely the result of domestic expertise, with no involvement from overseas Chinese professionals. "It is possible that the top 50 talents in this domain are not located in China," Liang remarked. "However, we can nurture our talent."
