Apple Set to Release AirTag 2 in 2025 with Enhanced Tracking and Safety Features

Apple is reportedly in the process of developing a second-generation AirTag, anticipated to be unveiled around mid-2025. As per Mark Gurman, this upcoming version, referred to as AirTag 2, is expected to feature a substantial enhancement in its tracking capabilities. A primary improvement will be an extended tracking range, aimed at assisting users in locating misplaced items more efficiently. This advancement is attributed to Apple's second-generation Ultra-Wideband (UWB) chip, which was introduced last year with the iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. The new chip is expected to provide up to three times the range of the original UWB chip that powers the first-generation AirTag.
Apple AirTag 2: Enhanced Tracking Distance.
Should these reports prove to be correct, the revised AirTag may offer a tracking range of around 60 meters (approximately 200 feet), akin to the Precision Finding capability found in the most recent iPhone models. Precision Finding assists users in accurately locating friends in crowded settings, and the enhanced range could facilitate the retrieval of misplaced items, whether they are keys at home or a bag forgotten in a public area. This enhancement in range would provide additional convenience and reassurance to users who frequently misplace their possessions.
Enhanced Safety Features.
The upcoming generation of AirTag is expected to include an enhanced built-in speaker, which will not only improve its range but also make it more difficult to detach. This modification is intended to tackle privacy and safety issues associated with potential misuse, including stalking. The existing model of AirTag has faced criticism due to its easily tampered speaker. In response to these security concerns, Apple appears to be reinforcing this aspect in the new iteration.
Anticipated Modest Adjustments to the Design.
The overall design of the AirTag is anticipated to remain predominantly unchanged, despite the forthcoming upgrades. Gurman indicates that apart from the upgraded chip and improved safety features, the visual aspect of the AirTag will not differ significantly.
The initial AirTag was introduced in April 2021, and by the time AirTag 2 is launched, it will have been nearly four years since the original version was released. The first model has gained considerable popularity among users seeking an effective solution for item tracking. Although Apple enthusiasts will have to wait until 2025 for the new release, the expected enhancements in tracking range and safety capabilities are likely to render the updated AirTag a valuable asset for individuals aiming to better protect their possessions.
