AI Robot Carves Marble Statues, Internet Reacts: "They Create, We Labor"
3 days ago | 5 Views
The Studio Ghibli phenomenon has captivated the internet, eliciting a range of responses. While some users have inundated social media with AI-generated images, fans of Hayao Miyazaki have expressed their discontent, viewing it as a slight against the artist's legacy. Recently, a video showcasing AI-driven robots sculpting marble has further astonished online audiences.
On March 21, Monumental Labs released a video featuring an AI robot meticulously carving a marble sculpture in the Renaissance style, utilizing advanced technology. Their Instagram account has also posted several additional videos of AI robots engaged in similar sculpting tasks. The video quickly gained traction, attracting criticism from various corners of the internet, including art aficionados who labeled it a betrayal of the art community and the creative domain.
AI-powered robot creates a marble sculpture
Monumental Labs has released a video featuring an AI robot engaged in the creation of a Renaissance-inspired marble statue of a man. The footage captures the machine as it carves the statue and applies water to refine the marble's surface. According to the Instagram account, the sculpture is titled 'St. Joseph'.
How did the internet react?
The online community voiced their frustration in the comment section. One commenter remarked, “Ah, so now AI is capable of creating sculptures as well. What an extraordinary era we live in. The technology sector must be thrilled. At last, their cherished machines can ‘produce art.’ Such excitement. Such progress. Truly, who needs a soul when there is code? But let’s pretend a robot can replicate what Michelangelo captured in the tension of Moses’ forearm. Let’s act as if it comprehends the secrets Da Vinci concealed behind the Mona Lisa’s smile. Or that it dreams as Van Gogh did. Or embodies surrealism like Dali did, long before Dali became merely a prompt rather than a painter.”
Another commenter stated, “In that case, I should be able to purchase it for ten dollars.” One comment expressed, “The robots create art while we labor and struggle. This is unjust.” Another user added, “Could we not have AI handle tasks like washing dishes, discovering cures for diseases, and cleaning up waste instead of sculpting, singing, and painting? These were all activities that PEOPLE chose to engage in for sheer JOY?” A user concluded, “The essence lies in the soul. Once machines begin to archive it, we are destined for ruin.”
What Monumental Labs said
In response to the significant backlash from online users, Monumental Labs released a video showcasing two sculptors engaged in the creation of a marble statue, accompanied by a sarcastic remark. “'This RoBot is NOT Michelangelo!' No kidding! For the statue of St. Joseph, the robot merely established the initial shape. Subsequently, our artisans will dedicate months to refining the final form using traditional carving tools. Our fabrication techniques substantially reduce costs, broadening the sculpture market and generating new prospects for skilled artisans,” they stated.
Despite the explanation provided, online users expressed contrasting opinions. One individual remarked, "The finishing touches necessitate human craftsmanship." Another user emphasized that, regardless of machine involvement, sculptors are essential, asserting that AI cannot substitute for true artistry.
