Currently serving as a mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants, Zaheer Khan's extensive experience has significantly benefited the IPL franchise, aiding in the development of both emerging talents and seasoned players. Recognized as one of the finest bowlers in the history of Indian cricket, Zaheer was a pivotal figure in the 2011 World Cup-winning team, where he spearheaded the bowling attack and claimed 21 wickets across just nine matches.
In 2011, he was also honored with the Arjuna Award by the President of India, which is the nation’s second-highest accolade in sports.
‘Not by applying’: Zaheer Khan on becoming Team India head coach
Regarding the prospect of becoming the head coach of Team India, Zaheer recently participated in an event in Kolkata. During a discussion, he was queried about his potential future role as a coach. In a light-hearted manner, he responded to the host's question about how this could happen without him applying.
Zaheer inquired, “Not by applying?”
When pressed further, he quickly stated, “It would be an honor to coach Team India.”
Should Zaheer take on the role of head coach for Team India in the future, his extensive IPL experience will be invaluable. He has previously served as the Director of Cricket and Head of Global Development for Mumbai Indians, as well as their bowling coach, where he played a crucial role in the development of Jasprit Bumrah, before joining LSG as a mentor in 2024.
Zaheer believes that the IPL has become a vital platform for discovering talented cricketers. “In the past, limited opportunities caused many gifted players to leave the sport. However, now, more players are remaining in the game, pursuing their aspirations of playing for an IPL franchise. This ambition aids their journey to the national team. In the dressing room, you will often find uncapped players eager to learn, engaging in conversations with established players like Nicholas Pooran, Rishabh Pant, or other senior cricketers with international experience. This dynamic is crucial for the continued success of Indian cricket. Collaborating with such players brings me genuine satisfaction.”
LSG presently occupies the sixth position in the IPL 2025 points table, having secured two victories and suffered two losses. The team features a revamped lineup, along with a new captain, Rishabh Pant. On the other hand, the Indian national team is under the guidance of coach Gautam Gambhir, who has achieved notable success by winning the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Rahul Dravid concluded his term after steering India to a T20 World Cup championship.
