Zaheer Khan Defends Rishabh Pant Against Gavaskar's Criticism: Trust Your Instincts

Rishabh Pant faced considerable challenges during the recent tour of Australia. Throughout five Test matches, he accumulated 255 runs, averaging a modest 28.33, with only one half-century to his name, which was notably scored at a crucial juncture in the final Test in Sydney.

Pant's shot selection came under intense scrutiny, particularly during the fourth Test, where former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar criticized the wicketkeeper-batter for carelessly losing his wicket. The 27-year-old was performing admirably until Australian captain Pat Cummins brought Travis Head into the bowling attack, likely aiming to provoke Pant into playing a more aggressive shot. This strategy proved effective, as Pant caught out at third man, contributing to India's eventual 184-run loss in Melbourne.

Gavaskar described Pant's decision-making as ‘stupid’ in a passionate critique. In contrast, former Indian bowler Zaheer Khan, who is set to collaborate with Pant at Lucknow Super Giants in the forthcoming IPL season, addressed the criticism in detail. Zaheer emphasized that all batsmen, not just Pant, should be allowed to “trust their instincts.”

“When it comes to batting, I will advocate for Rishabh and every other player in that squad to have the freedom to trust their instincts. Each player has sufficient experience at various levels to understand how the game progresses,” Zaheer stated in an interview with Cricbuzz.

He further asserted that batters should not be “confused” when making decisions, highlighting the importance of conviction.

“My philosophy centres on the game played on the field, where decisions must be made at the moment. Decision-making should not be clouded,” Zaheer remarked.

“It should be approached with clarity and instinct while keeping the team's objectives in focus. In a team sport, you are collectively striving for victory and facing defeat. Therefore, when participating in such a sport, one must align with what the team requires in that particular situation. This freedom will be afforded to everyone.”
