Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma's Divorce Fast-Tracked by Bombay High Court
7 days ago | 5 Views
The Bombay High Court has granted the request of Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and his estranged wife Dhanasree Verma to bypass the usual six-month cooling-off period after filing for divorce. The court instructed the family court to resolve their divorce case by Thursday, primarily due to Chahal's commitments to the IPL.
Justice Madhav Jamdar noted that Chahal will be unavailable starting March 21 because he is set to participate in IPL 2025, which kicks off on March 22.
Chahal and Verma submitted their divorce application to the family court on February 5 of this year, asking for the cooling-off period to be waived since their divorce is by mutual consent. However, the family court denied this request on February 20, prompting them to appeal the decision in the high court. According to the Hindu Marriage Act, couples must observe a six-month cooling-off period before a divorce can be finalized.
Justice Jamdar approved their petition, stating, "Since petitioner No. 1 (Chahal) will be involved in the IPL, his lawyer has indicated he may not be available after March 21. Therefore, we request the family court to resolve their divorce application by tomorrow (March 20)."
Chahal is set to prove his ₹18 Crore price tag with PBKS
Chahal, who has played for teams like Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Rajasthan Royals, was acquired by the Punjab Kings for an impressive ₹18 crore during the mega auctions. This marks the highest fee ever paid for a spinner in IPL history.
As a leg-spinner, he stands out as one of the top wicket-takers in the IPL, boasting 205 wickets. Notably, he is the only player to have surpassed the 200-wicket milestone in the league.
“I’ve got four variations (leg-spinner, two types of googlies, flipper). I have faith in them,” he shared with Hindustan Times. “Belief is key. How you react to match situations on the field is crucial. That’s when you determine whether to go for wickets or focus on stopping runs.
“I’ve always maintained a strong mental attitude. If you don’t believe in yourself, how can you expect others to? Whether I’m bowling the first over or the last, it’s important to think clearly and stay focused on the moment.”
Chahal will kick off his IPL 202 season when PBKS faces off against Gujarat Titans on March 25.
