Yuvraj Singh Urges Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to Embrace Domestic Cricket for Form Recovery
2 months ago | 5 Views
India's upcoming Test series is scheduled for five months from now, yet discussions have already commenced regarding the participation of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the current Ranji Trophy. Neither player has confirmed their availability for the forthcoming round of matches, while emerging talents Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant have already done so. The declining forms and lack of runs from Rohit and Kohli, coupled with their uncertain futures, have made it increasingly essential for these two stalwarts of Indian cricket to engage in domestic competitions to bolster their cases.
Rohit has joined the Mumbai team for training, but the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) is still awaiting a response from Kohli. As time is of the essence, former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has emphasized the significance of participating in domestic cricket, serving as a reminder to the out-of-form Rohit and Kohli. Yuvraj, who has shared the field with both players—winning the 2007 T20 World Cup with Rohit and the 2011 World Cup with Kohli—believes that regardless of a player's status, domestic cricket should be a priority whenever feasible.
"It is crucial to engage in domestic cricket. Every player should participate in domestic matches if they are not injured and have the opportunity," Yuvraj stated during an event when asked about the potential involvement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the Ranji Trophy, despite the Test series being some time away.
Rohit, Kohli and Bumrah are the only three to stay away from domestic cricket
Almost all members of the Indian cricket team, with the exception of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah, have participated in various domestic cricket formats. Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Shreyas Iyer have all had notable performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophies.
An injured Mohammed Shami represented Bengal in the Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy to regain full fitness and prepare for his return to the Indian squad for the T20 series against England. Even Ishan Kishan, who has been dropped from the team, participated in the Buchi Babu Tournament while emerging talents such as Sarfaraz Khan and Shubman Gill competed in the Duleep Trophy a few months ago.
Yuvraj Singh made his return to domestic cricket with Punjab during the 2014-15 season after being sidelined from the national team. In seven matches, he accumulated 671 runs, including three centuries, which were instrumental in restoring his form and confidence for a comeback to the Indian team. He was subsequently included in India's limited-overs squad for the tour of Australia in 2016 and participated in the T20 World Cup that same year.
Rohit Sharma last participated in the Ranji Trophy in 2015, while Virat Kohli's last appearance dates back to 2012.
