Yuvraj Singh Shows Solidarity with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli: 'Loss to New Zealand Hurts More'

India's captain Rohit Sharma and former skipper Virat Kohli have faced a lot of criticism following the team's poor performance in the 2024/25 Test season. However, former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has come out in support of his old teammates. The season kicked off on a high note for India, with a 2-0 victory over Bangladesh at home, including a remarkable win in Kanpur despite heavy rain interruptions.
Things took a turn for the worse, though, as India suffered a shocking 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand at home, setting some unwanted records. They also lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia for the first time in ten years. Throughout the season, both Rohit and Kohli struggled with their form. Yuvraj mentioned that he considers them and head coach Gautam Gambhir as close friends and family.
"These guys have played way more cricket than I ever have. I can share my thoughts, but when players are underperforming, it's easy to criticize. Supporting them is the tough part. The media loves to point fingers, but my role is to back my friends and brothers. They’re family to me, plain and simple," Yuvraj said.
He also expressed that the loss to New Zealand stings more than their 3-1 defeat in Australia. "For me, losing to New Zealand hurts more because it happened at home. That’s just not acceptable. Losing in Australia is a different story since we’ve won there before. Australia has been a strong team for so many years," he added.
Rohit Sharma is an awesome captain, whether he wins or loses
Yuvraj mentioned that he likes to focus on all the accomplishments India has made over the last five to six years, especially what Rohit has achieved as captain, instead of just zeroing in on the current situation. "I think about what India has done recently, like winning two consecutive series in Australia. I can't recall any other team pulling that off. We often criticize our legends like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, but people tend to overlook their past successes.
"They're among the top cricketers of their era. Sure, they faced losses, but they feel that pain way more than we do. I believe India will bounce back. With Gautam Gambhir as coach, Ajit Agarkar as selector, and the likes of Rohit, Virat, and Jasprit Bumrah involved, we have some of the best cricketing minds around. They need to figure out the future direction for Indian cricket, and I’m confident this will be a topic of discussion with the BCCI," Yuvraj added.
