Yuvraj Singh Restrained Abhishek Sharma from Parties and Relationships; Father Struggled to Manage Him: 'Similar Situation with Gill'

The relationship between Abhishek Sharma and Yuvraj Singh is well-known among Indian cricket enthusiasts. Abhishek, a batter for Sunrisers Hyderabad who has established himself as an opener in India's T20I team, has frequently acknowledged Yuvraj's influence on his career. In turn, the former all-rounder has consistently praised the young left-hander. A notable instance is Abhishek's record-setting 141-run innings against PBKS, where he credited Yuvraj for his support, and Yuvraj took to X to commend Abhishek for his maturity. But how did these two left-arm spin-bowling all-rounders connect? Yograj Singh, Yuvraj's father and a former Indian cricketer, asserts that their meeting was not by chance.
Yograj recounted that Yuvraj first became aware of Abhishek's remarkable performances in various age-group tournaments in Punjab and promptly requested his statistics from the Punjab Cricket Association. To his astonishment, the PCA referred to Abhishek primarily as a bowler.
“When we inquired about Abhishek Sharma’s performance records from the PCA and the coaches, they responded, ‘Sir, he is a bowler. He bowls.’ Yuvi insisted, ‘Just look at his performance records.’ Upon reviewing the statistics, we discovered that Abhishek had already scored 24 centuries. Yuvi remarked, ‘Why are you providing incorrect information? This player has made 24 centuries.’ This was six or seven years ago," Yograj Singh shared with Cricket Next.
Yograj further stated, “When Yuvi sent me that record, he said, ‘Papa, look at this player.’ I replied, ‘This is all about sharing information. The issue is that some individuals wish to undermine a player out of jealousy instead of focusing on their own careers.’”
Yuvraj stopped Ahishek and Gill from late-night parties: Yograj Singh
The former cricketer, now a distinguished coach, shared insights into how Yuvraj managed Abhishek's chaotic lifestyle to instill discipline. Yuvraj intervened to prevent Abhishek from attending late-night parties and meeting girlfriends at inappropriate hours, as recounted by Yograj.
"Late-night parties... girlfriends. What transpired? Yuvraj declared, ‘Lock him in.’ Abhishek fell under Yuvraj Singh's guidance since his father was unable to control him. Yuvi yelled, 'Where are you?' I heard him exclaim, 'It's 9 PM, go to bed. Do you understand me? I'm coming.' He then passed the phone and went to sleep. Yuvi instructed his father to wake him at 5 AM," he explained.
Yograj further remarked that Yuvraj treated Shubman Gill in a similar fashion. Both Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma advanced through the ranks and represented India in the U19 World Cup in 2018. "This is precisely what transpired with Shubman Gill," Yograj noted.
He emphasized that without Yuvraj's mentorship, a talent like Abhishek Sharma might have been overlooked. “What occurred next? When a diamond is placed in the hands of another diamond, what is the outcome? It transforms into a Kohinoor, and that is what happened with Abhishek Sharma. Had this diamond fallen into the wrong hands, it would have shattered and scattered. Many players in India have faced such a fate.”
