Yuvraj Singh Defends Rohit Sharma's Leadership Amid Criticism

Former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has stated that Rohit Sharma should not be evaluated solely on the basis of India's disappointing performance following the 2024 T20 World Cup. The 43-year-old has previously defended his former teammate, Rohit, who, along with India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, has faced criticism due to India's 3-1 loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

This defeat marked the first occasion in ten years that India relinquished the Trophy to Australia. Additionally, it resulted in India missing out on a place in the World Test Championship finals and followed a series of significant defeats, including a disheartening 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand on home soil. These circumstances have left many questions regarding Rohit’s leadership, despite his success in guiding India to T20 World Cup victory earlier in the year.

"I tend to assess the team's performance over a five-year or three-year span. Gautam has only recently joined the system and requires more time. Rohit Sharma has led the team to a T20 World Cup title and was at the helm during India's ODI World Cup final appearance. Furthermore, he has guided the Mumbai Indians to five IPL championships," Yuvraj remarked during a press event.

Talk about the good performances more, says Yuvraj

Yuvraj highlighted that Rohit had stepped aside from the team for the final Test against Australia following a series of underwhelming performances. "He has relinquished his position for the last match to allow another player an opportunity. How many captains have made such a decision in the past? I would like to know," he inquired.

Yuvraj emphasized that the 3-0 defeat to New Zealand on home soil is a more surprising outcome than the loss to Australia. "That is indeed a more difficult result to accept," Yuvraj remarked. Although India faced a series defeat in Australia, notable contributions were made by opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and newcomer Nitish Reddy, who achieved a remarkable century in the Melbourne Test.

"Nitish scored a century on his debut tour, which is extraordinary. I am uncertain how many have accomplished that. Jaiswal also scored over 150 in his first Test in Australia, which is highly praiseworthy. We ought to focus more on these achievements," Yuvraj concluded.
