‘You Sit at Home and Judge!’ Harbhajan Slams Critics in Shami Fasting Row

Mohammed Shami has recently come under fire from a Muslim cleric for not observing the fast during the holy month of Ramzan. The Indian pacer was labeled a ‘criminal and sinner’ for his decision, coinciding with India's semi-final match against Australia in the ongoing Champions Trophy.

Ramzan is a significant period of fasting for Muslims. Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, the cleric in question, condemned Shami for not participating in the fast, asserting that it constitutes a sin.

In response, former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh defended Shami in an interview, emphasizing the importance of separating religious practices from athletic responsibilities.

“I believe that this is my personal opinion, and I may be mistaken. Sports should be regarded as distinct from religious obligations. While individuals may choose to adhere to their religious practices, it is unreasonable to expect Shami, Rohit Sharma, or any other player to conform to such expectations during critical periods,” he stated.

He further elaborated, “While some may be able to maintain their routines at home, athletes must prioritize hydration and nutrition during competition. Given the intense heat they face, it is essential for them to stay hydrated. Competing without adequate nourishment is not feasible; the body requires fuel to perform.”

India triumphed over Australia by four wickets in the semi-finals and is set to compete against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final on Sunday in Dubai. Additionally, Rohit Sharma and his team have faced scrutiny for playing all their matches at the same venue, with opponents arguing that this grants India a home advantage.

Due to geopolitical tensions, India did not travel to Pakistan for the tournament. Instead, the ICC accommodated India's request to hold the matches at a neutral venue, which was established in Dubai.
