Yograj Speaks Out Against Body Shaming of Rohit Sharma: A Message for Pakistan
1 month ago | 5 Views
Yograj Singh, the father of Yuvraj Singh, criticized Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed for her remarks deemed as 'body shaming' directed at Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma. Mohamed faced backlash after referring to the 37-year-old as "fat" during the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 Group A match between India and New Zealand in Dubai, suggesting that he should lose some weight.
In a now-deleted social media post, she labeled Rohit Sharma as the "most unimpressive captain India has ever had," asserting that he is fortunate to lead the current Indian team.
Although the Congress party distanced itself from her comments, stating they do not reflect the party's stance, Shama Mohamed continues to face criticism on social media for her disrespect towards a captain who recently ended India's ICC trophy drought by winning the T20 World Cup 2024.
Supporters of Rohit Sharma have been reminding Shama Mohamed that India remains undefeated in the Champions Trophy thus far. Yograj Singh expressed that he holds Indian athletes in higher regard than his own life and will not tolerate any form of disrespect.
"Indian cricketers, the people, and the land are more precious to me than my own life. If someone within the political sphere makes disparaging remarks about a player who has brought honor to our nation, that individual should feel ashamed," Yograj Singh stated to news agency ANI.
"They have no right to reside in our country. Cricket is our religion; we faced defeats against New Zealand and Australia, and numerous comments were made about Rohit and Virat. We defended them. It deeply saddens me," he added.
'These things happen in Pakistan'
Yograj Singh remarked that unwarranted criticism is prevalent in Pakistan, referencing Wasim Akram's remark regarding the current players' excessive consumption of bananas.
For context, Akram made this statement following Pakistan's elimination from the ICC Men's Champions Trophy. Yograj Singh expressed that, were he the Prime Minister of India, he would not permit any disparagement of athletes and would demand that the offending individual leave the country.
"Such occurrences are common in Pakistan. Their former star player questioned, 'Who consumes so many bananas?' (In reference to Wasim Akram). Appropriate measures should be taken. This behavior is unacceptable," Yograj stated.
"If I were the prime minister, I would have instructed them to pack their bags and exit the country," he continued.
Earlier on Monday, Shama Mohamed defended her remarks regarding Rohit Sharma. "It was a general tweet concerning the fitness of an athlete. It was not intended as body-shaming. I have always maintained that athletes should be fit, and I perceived him to be slightly overweight, which prompted my tweet. I have faced unwarranted backlash," she commented, according to the Times of India.
