Yograj Singh Critiques Saqlain's Optimism: Pakistan's 78-Year Struggle
1 month ago | 5 Views
Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh, the father of Yuvraj Singh, did not hold back in his criticism of Saqlain Mushtaq, the former Pakistani spinner. Mushtaq, who is often hailed as one of the finest spinners in cricket history, suggested that India should engage in a series of 10 Tests, 10 ODIs, and 10 T20Is against Pakistan if they consider themselves a strong team. Yograj Singh responded sharply, asserting that Pakistan lacks the capability to compete with the current Indian squad.
In his remarks, Saqlain Mushtaq commended the Indian team and urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to arrange matches with Pakistan across all three formats, should they believe in their superiority. He further stated that Pakistan needs to organize itself better to achieve favorable results.
Yograj Singh criticized former Pakistani players for their tendency to make media statements rather than concentrating on improving their team's on-field performance.
For context, India recently triumphed in the 2025 Champions Trophy, which was hosted by Pakistan, while Mohammad Rizwan's team failed to qualify for the semi-finals, losing all their matches in the eight-team tournament.
"I have seen Saqlain's comments. What is he trying to imply? They lack the ability to appreciate the situation. They merely talk without substance. Many voices have been silenced. They have not learned anything in 78 years. What can I teach them? Those who continuously criticize their players, what can they impart?" Yograj stated to news agency ANI.
"They should take lessons from India and its governance on how to manage a country. It feels as though India is competing against a local team. They should consider playing against our 'B' team," he remarked.
Previously, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar also suggested that the current Pakistan team might find it challenging to compete against an Indian 'B' team. However, this assertion faced criticism from former cricketers like Inzamam-ul-Haq and Jason Gillespie.
What did Saqlain Mushtaq say?
Saqlain Mushtaq, during an appearance on the 24 News HD channel, articulated his aspiration to witness India compete against Pakistan across all three formats of cricket, allowing fans to ascertain which team is superior.
"Setting aside political considerations, it is evident that their players are exceptionally skilled and have been performing well in cricket. If we truly consider ourselves a strong team, I propose we engage in 10 Test matches, 10 One Day Internationals, and 10 Twenty20 Internationals against Pakistan; this would provide clarity," he remarked.
Mushtaq further stated, "If we can align our preparations and address our issues effectively, we will be positioned to deliver convincing responses to both the world and India."
Pakistan's performance in the ICC Men's Champions Trophy was disappointing, as they were eliminated in the group stage without securing a single victory in Group A. The team suffered defeats against India and New Zealand, and their final group match against Bangladesh was abandoned due to rain in Rawalpindi.
Consequently, Pakistan concluded the group stage at the bottom of the points table, accumulating only 1 point from 3 matches.
