Yashasvi Jaiswal is definitely the center of attention wherever he plays, no matter the format. At just 22, he’s kicked off his senior career in style, making waves in Test cricket, T20Is, and the IPL. Although he hasn’t been on fire during India’s current tour of Australia, his impressive 161 in Perth during just his second international innings in the country showcased his potential.

Allan Border, the Australian cricket legend and one of the namesake of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy being contested in this five-Test series, praised Jaiswal as a “tough kid.” He acknowledged that while Jaiswal might face some rough patches, it’s all about how he recovers from them. “I love his backstory,” Border shared with TOI, highlighting Jaiswal's inspiring journey. "We're talking about a really resilient kid here. For him to rise from his struggles to make it to the Test team of a nation with 1.2 billion people is just incredible. His talent is undeniable, and it’s clearly shining through," said the former Australia captain who won the World Cup in 1987.

He'll definitely have his ups and downs since he's just starting out

Border mentioned that Jaiswal has the edge of being a relatively unknown player. The upcoming Boxing Day Test will mark just his 18th match. "He'll have his moments since he's still new. Not many have seen him play yet. It’ll take some time for bowlers to figure him out. He might hit a rough patch but will likely bounce back stronger. I think he’s really talented," Border commented.

Jaiswal has racked up an impressive 1600 runs in only 32 Test innings, boasting an average of 53.33, including four centuries and eight fifties. This year alone, he’s hit three centuries, with his 161 in Perth being the lowest, while the other two were double tons. He’s also a formidable T20 player, amassing 2978 runs in 104 matches at a strike rate of 150.25, featuring three centuries and 17 fifties. In T20 internationals, he has scored 723 runs in 23 games at a strike rate of 164.31, with one century and five fifties. Although he hasn’t debuted in ODIs yet, his List A stats are impressive, with 1511 runs in 32 matches at an average of 53.96, including five centuries and seven fifties.
