Yashasvi Jaiswal's Move to Goa Sparks Criticism: Told to Focus on India's All-Format Cricket

Yashasvi Jaiswal, the left-handed batter from India, has caught everyone off guard by deciding to leave Mumbai and join Goa for the upcoming domestic season. The 23-year-old sent an email to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) requesting a No-Objection Certificate to facilitate his transfer, and he has now received the green light to play for Goa, meaning he won't be representing Mumbai anymore. However, former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer is not thrilled about Jaiswal's choice, calling it "surprising and shocking."

Jaffer thinks that switching from Mumbai is something one might consider only at the age of 34 or 35, making it unusual for someone as young as Jaiswal to make such a move. It's worth noting that Jaffer himself left Mumbai for Vidarbha later in his career, but that was during the twilight of his playing days.

Jaiswal's last appearance for Mumbai was in a Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir, where he scored 4 and 26 runs. During a discussion on ESPNCricinfo's 'Timeout', Jaffer expressed that Jaiswal should concentrate on playing all three formats for India rather than focusing on the prestigious red-ball tournament in domestic cricket.

"I was really surprised and shocked that he chose to play for Goa. Whatever Goa was offering him, leaving Mumbai at this age is a big deal. It's understandable for someone who's 34 or 35 to consider a change," Jaffer remarked.

"I'm genuinely surprised. He should not be aiming to play in the Ranji Trophy; his goal should be to represent India in all formats. That should be his main focus," he added.

Earlier, MCA secretary Abhay Hadap confirmed to Hindustan Times that Jaiswal has received an NOC to join Goa. In a previous interview with Indian Express, Jaiswal mentioned that the opportunity for a leadership role in Goa was a significant factor in his decision to make the switch.

Jaiswal hits his stride

In the IPL 2025 match against Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals' Jaiswal showed his skills by scoring 67 runs off 45 balls, including 3 fours and 5 sixes. His performance was key in helping the Royals set a total of 205/4 in their 20 overs.

Rajasthan Royals secured a 50-run victory, with Jofra Archer, Sandeep Sharma, and Maheesh Theekshana playing pivotal roles in dismantling Punjab Kings' batting lineup.

Commenting on Jaiswal's innings, Jaffer noted that the left-handed batsman was focused on hitting the ball hard. He also acknowledged the Punjab Kings bowlers for their effective line and length against Jaiswal.

"It didn't seem like he was struggling for form since he was really going for it, hitting five sixes and three fours. His boundary rate is impressive, but he still had quite a few dot balls. I thought the Punjab Kings bowlers did a great job," Jaffer remarked.

In this 18th season of the lucrative league, Jaiswal has tallied scores of 1, 29, 4, and 67, bringing his total to 101 runs over four matches.
