India shook things up a bit for their ODI opener against England, going with debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal to partner captain Rohit Sharma instead of the usual Shubman Gill. This change came as a surprise, especially since Gill has been Rohit's go-to opening partner and they've put up some impressive numbers together.

In the match at VCA Stadium, India was chasing a target of 249 runs. Jaiswal, who just received his debut cap earlier that day, stepped up to the crease with Rohit. This was a notable shift since Gill, the vice-captain, typically opens alongside Rohit. The duo has scored 1732 runs together in 25 innings, making them the fourth-highest run-scoring opening pair in ODIs.

However, for this first ODI of the three-match series, India opted for a right-left combination at the top. Jaiswal hadn't played a List A match since November 2022, but he has a solid domestic record with 1511 runs in 32 matches at an average of 53.96, including five centuries.

Virat Kohli is the driving force behind India's decision to bring in Jaiswal?

Former Indian cricketer Parthiv Patel shared his thoughts with the broadcasters, noting that Jaiswal got his chance after Virat Kohli had to sit out the series opener due to a knee issue.

"Check out his List A stats; the guy has scored a ton of runs. Since his Test debut, it was just a matter of time before Jaiswal made his one-day debut. It was never about if he would play, but when. Now, with Kohli injured, Jaiswal has stepped in. It's a great spot for him to be in," he mentioned.

Parthiv also pointed out that placing Gill at No. 3 is a "tricky" decision for the team.

"It's a tough call moving forward. Once Kohli is back, Gill will likely return to opening. But this is a fantastic chance for Jaiswal to prove just how talented he is," he added.
