Yashasvi Jaiswal Takes Lead Over Shubman Gill for Champions Trophy Opening Slot

Yashasvi Jaiswal is highly regarded as a potential future star among Indian cricketers, although he has yet to make his One Day International debut. He has, however, secured his place in the Indian Test and T20I teams. Former Indian captain and renowned batsman Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his desire to see Jaiswal open alongside Rohit Sharma in the upcoming Champions Trophy.
Gavaskar emphasized his preference for Jaiswal due to the advantageous left-right batting combination it would create at the top of the order for India. "Who would want to be an Indian selector? For me, the inclusion of left-handed Yashasvi Jaiswal is essential because of his left-handed style. One of the significant advantages, or disadvantages depending on perspective, is the presence of white balls," Gavaskar stated during a discussion on Star Sports.
He further explained, "What constitutes a challenging delivery for a right-hander may be deemed a wide down the leg side for a left-hander, resulting in an additional run and an extra ball. This left-right combination, particularly with Rishabh Pant in the middle order, will significantly impact the game."
Jaiswal vs Gill for Champions Trophy opening slot
Should this scenario unfold, Jaiswal may be afforded an opportunity in India's forthcoming ODI series against England, which serves as a precursor to the Champions Trophy. However, this would necessitate the removal of Shubman Gill from that role. Despite a somewhat inconsistent record in Test matches, Gill has excelled in ODIs, amassing 2,328 runs in 47 matches at an impressive average of 58.20, including six centuries and 13 half-centuries.
In contrast, Jaiswal boasts an average of 53.96 across the 32 List A matches he has participated in to date. He has demonstrated remarkable versatility, achieving a strike rate of 150.25 in 104 T20 matches and maintaining an average of 62.40 in 35 first-class games. In his 19 Test appearances, Jaiswal has accumulated 1,798 runs at an average of 52.88, featuring four centuries and 10 half-centuries. Additionally, he has scored 723 runs in 23 T20 Internationals at a strike rate of 164.31, which includes one century and five half-centuries.
