Yashasvi Jaiswal Sends a Stern Message to Indian Opener Ahead of England Series

Yashasvi Jaiswal Sends a Stern Message to Indian Opener Ahead of England Series

Aakash Chopra, the former Indian opener, believes that Abhishek Sharma will face considerable pressure during the T20I series against England. The team management has shown support for Abhishek in the T20I format, particularly as another emerging talent, Yashasvi Jaiswal, has been prioritized for the recently concluded red-ball season. Nonetheless, Jaiswal's significant potential ensures that he will remain a key contender for next year's T20 World Cup.

Chopra remarked that Jaiswal's presence creates a challenging environment for Abhishek, whose position in the T20I squad is precarious.

"Abhishek Sharma has received a vote of confidence, which I appreciate, as he has been retained in the team. However, his situation is quite delicate. To be fair, Yashasvi Jaiswal is closely competing with him, and that is entirely justified," Chopra stated on his YouTube channel.

In addition, Jaiswal has been selected for the ODI series against England and the Champions Trophy, although it is improbable that he will feature in the playing XI, given that Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are expected to open the innings.

Chopra further suggested that Jaiswal should have been included in the T20I squad to gain valuable experience in white-ball cricket ahead of the Champions Trophy.

"He is also a left-handed batsman with a similar playing style. He is capable of performing across all formats and is currently in good form. As an Indian fan, one might start to worry that he won't get an opportunity in ODIs since Shubman (Gill) and Rohit (Sharma) are likely to open, leaving him with little match practice before the Champions Trophy," he noted.

‘A massive opportunity for Abhishek Sharma’

The ex-cricketer who has transitioned into commentary remarked that Jaiswal's absence presents a significant opportunity for Abhishek, who has struggled with consistency, accumulating 256 runs in 12 matches at a disappointing average of 23.27.

"Only performing in the Ranji Trophy does not constitute a compelling narrative. Viewed from this perspective, it is a substantial chance for Abhishek. He has not capitalized on his opportunities to date. His century in Zimbabwe was commendable, and he also had one notable performance in South Africa," Chopra explained.
