Rajasthan Royals' pursuit of 206 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday showcased a significant duel between Royal Challengers Bengaluru bowler Josh Hazlewood and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Ultimately, the Aussie emerged victorious as he delivered a send-off, leaving the RR opener infuriated. The incident necessitated intervention from the umpire.
The duel commenced during the fourth over of the match's second innings. Jaiswal had made an explosive start to the chase, scoring 23 runs from the first eight balls he faced, including a first-ball six against Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Hazlewood targeted him with shorter deliveries on the leg-stump line. The initial three balls yielded no runs, but as soon as the fast bowler adjusted his line, Jaiswal capitalized on it and struck the next three for consecutive boundaries.
Jaiswal maintained his advantage over the seasoned bowler as he returned to attack in the final over of the powerplay, hitting two boundaries and a six in the first four balls before Hazlewood changed his angle, bowled a slower delivery, and directed it into his body. Attempting a pull shot, the left-hander found himself crammed for space, leading to a miscue off his splice that resulted in the ball ballooning to midwicket for a straightforward catch. Jaiswal was dismissed just one run shy of his half-century.
Having the last laugh in this duel, Hazlewood quickly replied with a send-off, signaling for Jaiswal to head back to the dugout. This act did not sit well with the batter, as he expressed his frustration verbally before exiting. The incident prompted the umpire to step in, issuing a warning to RCB captain Rajat Patidar.
RCB sets a new record total
Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal secured themselves effortless half-centuries as Royal Challengers Bengaluru set a formidable total of 205 for five against Rajasthan Royals. This was the highest score for RCB against the Royals in IPL, surpassing their 200/7 at the same venue in 2015.
On a pitch where making runs was quite challenging, RCB also benefitted from Jitesh Sharma (20 not out off 10 balls) and Tim David (23 off 15 balls), who delivered some powerful hits to push RCB beyond 200.
This occurred after Kohli (70 off 42 balls) and Padikkal (50 off 27) managed the middle overs with a partnership of 95 for the second wicket.
