With Bumrah Doubts Lingering, Calls Grow for Harshit Rana's ODI Debut Against England

Jasprit Bumrah's quiet exit from the three-match ODI series against England due to injury has raised concerns about his availability for the upcoming Champions Trophy. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has thrown a challenging task at head coach Gautam Gambhir, considering the ICC tournament ahead.
Bumrah is in a race against time to recover for the Champions Trophy starting on February 19, especially after he missed the last day of the Sydney Test in January because of a back injury. India's chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, had previously mentioned that the 31-year-old would be back for the final ODI against England. However, he was left out of the updated ODI squad released by the BCCI on Tuesday, which included spinner Varun Chakaravarthy.
Shortly after the news broke, Aakash took to social media to urge Gambhir to find a way to include uncapped Harshit Rana in the lineup against England. He acknowledged that it would be a challenge, given that Mohammed Shami and Arshdeep Singh are expected to be the top two pace options, with all-rounder Hardik Pandya filling in as the third seamer.
He posted: “Bumrah’s name isn’t in the updated squad. Not even for the final ODI. Siraj is already out. We need to find a way to get Rana in for his debut against England. I’m not sure how that’ll work… with Arshdeep having limited ODI experience and Shami coming back. Should we go with three seamers?”
Rohit Sharma shared some news about Bumrah
Rohit spoke to the media on Wednesday, just before the ODI series kicks off, and mentioned that we should have an update on Bumrah's recovery in about two days once his scan results come in.
In the meantime, Shami will take over the pace attack while Bumrah is out. Shami has bounced back from an ankle injury and has been playing in domestic cricket and the recent T20 series, though his performance has been a bit hit or miss.
"He's been out of the game for a year and a half, so let's not rush to judge him," Rohit said about Shami.
"He’s been a solid player for the last 10-12 years and has delivered for the team. He bowled really well in the World Cup (2023). Just because he hasn’t had the best results in a few domestic games doesn’t mean he’s lost his touch."
