Will Rohit Sharma Maintain ODI Form? Manjrekar Questions Consistency After Century
1 month ago | 5 Views
India's captain Rohit Sharma struggled to score runs during the 2024/25 Test season, averaging a disappointing 10.93 over 15 innings. But in Cuttack, he turned things around spectacularly, taking on England's bowlers in the second ODI and hitting a brilliant 119 off just 90 balls, leading India to a four-wicket victory. Still, former Indian player Sanjay Manjrekar raised concerns about whether the 37-year-old can maintain this level of performance consistently due to fitness issues.
Manjrekar pointed out that while Rohit's resurgence is a positive sign for India, he appeared quite exhausted by the end of his innings. "You could see it took a lot out of him. Playing fifty overs can be really tough on everyone—bowlers, fielders, and batters alike. Virat Kohli understands how physically demanding it is, which is why his fitness has helped him keep scoring centuries by running those singles and twos," Manjrekar commented on ESPNcricinfo.
Rohit Sharma's performances in both 2019 and 2023 have been outstanding for Indian cricket
Rohit, often called 'Hitman', was famous for his explosive batting style, especially after reaching the 100-run mark in ODIs, which helped him rack up three double centuries. Recently, though, he’s switched things up, opting to start strong right from the get-go, a strategy that played a key role in India’s journey to the 2023 World Cup final. Before 2021, he only managed a strike rate over 100 in ODIs once in a year, but in 2022, he averaged 114.22 across eight innings, and in 2023, he ramped it up to 117.07 in an impressive 27 ODIs. In 2024, he even hit a strike rate of 141.44 in just three ODIs.
"Rohit Sharma used to have a different approach where he didn’t need to run much. It was incredible to see him score his second double hundred. But now, at this point in his career, when you watch him go through the motions to get that big hundred, you can tell he really wants it. Whether he can keep that up like he did in 2019 is still up in the air. I have my reservations. But both versions of Rohit Sharma from 2019 and 2023 are fantastic for Indian cricket," Manjrekar commented.
