Will IPL 2025 Be the Key to Gill and Jaiswal’s T20I Return?

Mumbai: In the past nine months, Indian cricket has significantly enhanced its trophy collection by securing two world titles. The team demonstrated its adaptability and depth by clinching the ODI Champions Trophy on challenging pitches in Dubai earlier this month, and triumphing on uneven surfaces in the USA and slow tracks in the West Indies to win the 2024 T20 World Cup.
A notable resurgence in batting performance was observed during the less celebrated bilateral T20Is on favorable batting surfaces. Previously hesitant to accelerate their scoring, India achieved impressive totals of 283 and 297 runs in 2024, while also hitting the highest number of sixes (23) in a single calendar year.
The key figures behind this transformation were young left-handers Abhishek Sharma (24) and Tilak Varma (22), along with the talented Sanju Samson, who has finally tapped into his potential. With the T20 World Cup scheduled to take place at home next year, these batters are expected to continue pushing their limits. For newcomers to secure a place in the team, they must match the intensity and ambition displayed by these players.
Leading the charge for potential replacements are Yashasvi Jaiswal, 23, and Shubman Gill, 25. While the T20I team was racking up runs, these two emerging talents, viewed as future all-format players, were enduring a demanding Test season in India.
Simply returning to availability will not guarantee their selection. India's T20I strategy has been revamped to be as contemporary as that of any rival. This was clearly illustrated in the last T20I India played last year at the Wanderers, where Varma, elevated to the No. 3 position, partnered with Samson to dismantle the South African bowling attack, amassing 210 runs for the second wicket in just 85 balls.
Samson remained in the background to deliver powerful punches and pulls, while Varma showcased his full array of skills against both pace and spin. Previously, Sharma confidently advanced down the pitch against fast bowlers without hesitation. He continued this approach when England's pace attack visited in early 2025.
“Combining fearlessness with freedom creates something extraordinary,” Hardik Pandya remarked on Wednesday, reflecting on the positive results. “I wouldn’t have dared to step out against Jofra Archer during the powerplay, but that’s the nature of youth. I was 21 once. The players who are 21, 22, or 23 today exhibit even greater fearlessness and excitement. You don’t need to instruct them on when to advance; just grant them the freedom, and they will choose the best options.”
Varma, one of the retained players by the Mumbai Indians alongside their star names, aims to leverage his international experiences to make this IPL truly unforgettable.
T20 WC AHEAD
With players like Jaiswal and Gill eager to rejoin the T20I setup, their batting techniques in the forthcoming season will be under close scrutiny. They are aware of this themselves. “The pace of the game has escalated to a level where scoring 300 in a match seems feasible,” Gill remarked to the official broadcaster.
As the captain of the Gujarat Titans, it will be Gill's responsibility to establish the tempo. “As a batsman, I must approach my innings in a manner that enables us to optimize the Powerplay. That is my goal, and I hope we can correct the mistakes made last season,” he stated to reporters in Ahmedabad.
Gill will need to choose his battles wisely. He is likely to enjoy opening alongside Jos Buttler rather than Wriddhiman Saha, as Sai Sudharsan had taken the opening role towards the end of last season. The batting lineup of GT lacked depth, which hindered Gill's ability to fully express his game. Their strike rate was disappointing in a season that saw new scoring records, driven by the Impact Player rule.
Buttler's transfer to GT will likely position Jaiswal to open for the Rajasthan Royals alongside Samson, who has adapted to the new role in the national team. However, Samson has faced similar dismissals recently, falling victim to short balls from England's fast bowlers. As he recovers from a finger injury, he has work ahead of him.
Recent events remind us that Jaiswal narrowly missed selection for India's Champions Trophy squad. He was a formidable presence in the Test matches in Australia. Moreover, even before Sharma and Varma established themselves in the IPL, Jaiswal's aggressive cuts and drives during the Powerplay were evident. The RR opener has the potential to match Buttler shot for shot, which is how he first gained recognition. It is now his opportunity to capture attention once more, especially with numerous options available in India's top-order batting lineup. A challenging decision for the selectors is certainly a positive situation.
