West Indies' Comeback: Ending a 34-Year Wait with Test Victory in Multan
2 months ago | 5 Views
Pakistan experienced a significant setback on Monday, concluding at the bottom of the World Test Championship points table after suffering a 120-run defeat to West Indies in the second and final Test match of the series held in Multan. This victory marked West Indies' first win in Pakistan in 34 years, resulting in a series draw of 1-1. Pakistan had previously secured a win in the first Test by 127 runs, also in Multan.
West Indies spinner Jomel Warrican delivered a remarkable performance, claiming five wickets in the final innings, totaling nine wickets in the match and 19 throughout the series, effectively exploiting the spin-friendly conditions. Beginning Day 3 at 76 for four while chasing a target of 254, Pakistan's hopes were pinned on Saud Shakeel. However, his aspirations were thwarted when Kevin Sinclair had him caught in the slip for 13 runs. The remainder of the batting order collapsed within approximately 20 overs, managing only 67 runs, leading to Pakistan's total of just 133 in their final innings.
This victory was historic for West Indies, as their last Test win in Pakistan occurred in November 1990 in Faisalabad, following unsuccessful tours in 1997 and 2006.
Pakistan finish bottom of WTC points table
Pakistan's performance in the World Test Championship has been disappointing, finishing last in the points table with only five victories out of 14 matches during the 2023/25 cycle, which included nine losses. Their points percentage (PCT) stood at a mere 27.89, marking their poorest performance in any WTC cycle. In the inaugural edition, they achieved three wins in six matches, finishing sixth with a PCT of 43.3. In the subsequent cycle (2021/23), they placed seventh with four wins in 14 games, resulting in a PCT of 38.1.
In contrast, South Africa topped the table following an impressive winning streak at home, with defending champions Australia in second place. Both teams are set to compete for the title in June at Lord's. India, a two-time runner-up, concluded the cycle in third place with nine victories out of 19 matches.
