West Indies captain Hayley Matthews delivered an extraordinary performance on Wednesday during the Women's World Cup qualifier against Scotland in Lahore. Despite sustaining an injury that required her to be stretchered off the field, her all-round contributions were ultimately in vain as Scotland emerged victorious.

In the first innings, Matthews achieved her third-best bowling figures in her career, taking 4 wickets for 56 runs, helping to dismiss Scotland for 245 runs in 44 overs on the opening day of the 2025 Women's World Cup Qualifier. Scotland experienced a batting collapse after reaching 182 for four in 34 overs, as they aimed for a larger total. Nevertheless, they managed to secure their third-highest ODI score ever, and the highest against an ICC Full Member.

In response, the West Indies faced a disastrous start, losing Matthews' opening partner, Qiana Joseph, in the second over. However, the team regrouped, thanks to a significant second-wicket partnership of 113 runs between Matthews and Zaida James.

Scotland quickly struck back, taking wickets that reduced the West Indies to 203 for nine. The situation worsened for the West Indies when Matthews suffered from severe cramping, forcing her to retire hurt twice while on scores of 95 and 99. In the 42nd over, she was carried off the field but returned shortly after to complete her ninth ODI century in just 101 balls, keeping the West Indies' hopes alive.

With this century, Matthews became only the fourth woman in ODI history to score a hundred and take four wickets in the same match, and the first female captain to achieve this remarkable feat. At 27 years and 111 days, she also became the second-youngest and second-fastest player to reach nine ODI centuries, accomplishing this in 88 innings.

Matthews continued to fight, adding 15 more runs in a partnership of 30 with Aaliyah Alleyne. However, in a disappointing turn of events, Scotland secured an 11-run victory. Spinner Abtaha Maqsood dismissed Alleyne in the 47th over, leaving Matthews stranded at the crease.
