"Hum Koi Retire Nahi Ho Rahe": Rohit Hits Back at Critics, Kohli Reacts After Dandiya Moment
23 days ago | 5 Views
Speculation was widespread regarding the potential retirement of either Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma following the Champions Trophy final on Sunday in Dubai, regardless of the match outcome. However, both players swiftly dispelled these rumours after India's exhilarating four-wicket victory over New Zealand, which secured them the ICC tournament title. In the aftermath of the final, the two veteran batsmen officially stated that they were not ready to conclude their careers in the ODI format, a confirmation that came shortly after their celebratory 'dandiya' dance, which gained significant attention on social media.
Kohli and Rohit concluded their T20I careers on a triumphant note last June, following India's victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup held in Barbados. A similar success was anticipated on Sunday, particularly given the ongoing discussions surrounding their futures after a challenging period in recent months.
While Kohli was not directly associated with Rohit in retirement discussions, a report from PTI before the final suggested that the 37-year-old was reflecting on his ODI career and intended to discuss his future with the chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, after the match against New Zealand.
Nevertheless, following their viral 'dandiya' celebrations after winning the Champions Trophy and subsequent photo opportunities, Rohit addressed the critics who speculated about their retirement, stating: "Abhi hum koi retire nehi ho rahe (We Are Not Retiring Now...)." This remark elicited laughter from Kohli.
What did Kohli and Rohit say about retirement?
The 36-year-old cricketer was the first to address speculation regarding his retirement, as Kohli affirmed his intention to continue playing. Consequently, the possibility of his participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup remains intact. His remarks followed comments from former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull, who suggested that the next generation of Indian cricketers is poised to take over.
Kohli stated, "Absolutely. As Shubman mentioned, I make it a point to engage with these players as much as I can, sharing my experiences and insights on how I have sustained my career for so long. I aim to contribute wherever possible to enhance their skills, and indeed, as they rightly say, when the time comes to depart, one should leave the environment in a better state."
Conversely, Rohit provided a more direct and uncomplicated response during the post-match press conference. He remarked, "Additionally, I want to clarify that I have no plans to retire from this format, to prevent any further speculation."
