Waugh Backs Australia's Decision to Replace McSweeney as Hussey Questions Bumrah Challenge

Nathan McSweeney has been left out of the Australian team for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, making way for 19-year-old opener Sam Konstas. McSweeney's exit came after the third Test, which ended in a rain-affected draw. He made his Test debut in Perth but has now been sidelined after just three matches.

On Fox Cricket, former Australian cricketer Mark Waugh suggested that McSweeney's removal was due to the influence of senior players in the squad. Waugh also mentioned that he expects Konstas to open alongside Usman Khawaja in the fourth Test. “I think he’s a lock to open,” he stated.

Waugh added, “They’ve picked him because they need a bit more aggressive batting at the top, especially since Usman and Marnus have been a bit off their game.

“Nathan McSweeney wasn’t making runs either. So, I believe the younger, more dynamic player will definitely get a chance.”

Michael Hussey asks a question about 'Jasprit Bumrah'

Michael Hussey thought it was a bit harsh on McSweeney since he had to go up against bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah, and the other Aussie batsmen weren't exactly shining either. Hussey mentioned, “It’s a big moment for Sam, a fantastic chance for him, but it’s a tough situation because the opening batsmen from both sides have had a rough time.”

“The ball has been moving quite a bit. It’s not easy to just step in and be super aggressive against someone like Bumrah on pitches that have a lot going on.”

“You can see it from both angles. Sure, the top order hasn’t been racking up runs, but they’ve been taking their time, which has let guys like Travis Head and Alex Carey come in and play their game.”

“So, it’s a tricky decision, but they’re clearly committed to going all out to win these last two Tests,” he added.

Waugh also believes that the Australian team was selected this way for the last two matches because of how crucial the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024 is.

He mentioned that it seems like the team selection is based on winning the last two Test matches.

“They're not too focused on the long-term right now. Sure, you keep an eye on the future, but this series is massive, especially with the World Test Championship on the line.

“I believe the selectors are concentrating on the upcoming Tests at the MCG and SCG. They’re figuring out the best lineup to secure victories in those matches.

“They might feel they need a bit more batting strength at the top of the order.

“I mean, it’s tough to drop one of the seasoned players, so it’s likely Nathan McSweeney who gets the short end of the stick, just by process of elimination,” he added.

Hussey was also curious about why Australia decided to make changes when they were performing well in India during the current series.

The fourth Test is set to take place in Melbourne, kicking off on Boxing Day (December 26). The first Test saw India take a win in Perth, but the Aussies bounced back in Adelaide to even the series at 1-1. Then in Brisbane, it looked like Australia was on track for a win, but rain intervened, leading both teams to settle for a draw.
