Wasim Akram's Reality Check: ‘No Pride Left, Just Finish the Match'
2 months ago | 5 Views
The washout in Rawalpindi has effectively concluded Pakistan's journey in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Following their defeats to New Zealand and India, the team found itself in a precarious position. They required a victory from Bangladesh against New Zealand, but once the BlackCaps secured a decisive win, Pakistan was eliminated from the first ICC event they hosted in nearly three decades, leaving a predominantly bitter taste.
Pakistan's only chance to conclude the tournament positively rested on a victory over Bangladesh; however, the rain in Rawalpindi thwarted any such opportunity. The narrative leading into the match was centered around 'playing for pride,' yet Wasim Akram dismissed this notion. He emphasized the futility of the situation, stating that with Pakistan already out of contention, the match held little significance.
"What pride? I have already advised against this line of questioning. Pride is relevant only when there is a chance to qualify. What pride is there now? Both teams must return home – Bangladesh and Pakistan. Just play and go home now," Akram remarked during his appearance on the show DP World Dressing Room by Ten Sports.
He further expressed concern over the team's performance, noting, "Ability is essential. While planning may seem straightforward, Pakistan has consistently underperformed, finishing 7th or 8th in both World Test Championships, failing to advance past the league stage in the 2025 T20 World Cup, missing out on the 2023 ODI World Cup, and now being eliminated from the Champions Trophy. This is indeed troubling, especially as many of the same players continue to be part of the squad."
Waqar Younis disagrees with Wasim Akram
Waqar Younis expresses a differing opinion from Wasim Akram. His long-time bowling partner, Waqar, maintains that the players should continue to compete. Pakistan has faced challenges in the Champions Trophy, having lost the tri-series final to New Zealand and subsequently falling to the same team again. The squad now has a brief respite before heading to New Zealand for a series of five T20 internationals and three One Day Internationals in March and April. Waqar emphasizes that significant improvements are necessary.
"While the tournament has concluded, cricket continues. One must not lose hope. There is much work ahead, and I am confident that following this tournament, the PCB will convene to assess our direction, identify deficiencies, and determine necessary actions. There will be extensive discussions, and I hope we can realign our efforts," stated the former Pakistan fast bowler.
