Wasim Akram Takes Veiled Dig at Waqar Younis After Yograj Singh's Remarks: 'Aap Log Badtameezi Karte Hain...'

Two days following former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh's declaration to travel to Pakistan to enhance their cricketing prospects, while also taking a jab at Wasim Akram for his remarks, the 58-year-old has offered a response—albeit subtly critical—regarding his reluctance to assume coaching or mentoring roles for the struggling team. The host nation, Pakistan, faced elimination from the Champions Trophy 2025 merely five days after the tournament commenced, culminating a 29-year wait to host an ICC event disappointingly. The team was unable to secure a single victory, suffering defeats against New Zealand and India, and experiencing a washout against Bangladesh, resulting in a total of just one point.

Akram, known for his outspoken criticism of Pakistan's team performance, has consistently delivered pointed remarks. In response to his comment, "Itne kele toh bandar nahi karate," Yograj admonished him, suggesting that esteemed figures like himself and Shoaib Akhtar should feel "ashamed" for making such statements instead of supporting the players. Although Akram did not specifically address Yograj, his comments were aimed at all who have criticized

"People occasionally criticize me or claim that I only talk and do nothing else. When I observe the state of Pakistan's coaches—like Waqar, who has been dismissed multiple times after taking on the coaching role—I find it intolerable when people disrespect them," Akram stated during the DP World Dressing Room show on Ten Sports.

In a compelling argument, Akram referenced Waqar Younis, his fellow panellist, and his coaching history. Waqar, regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers globally, has served as the national team's coach on three occasions—initially as bowling coach in 2006 and subsequently as head coach in 2010 and 2016—only to be relieved of his responsibilities each time.

Wasim Akram is willing to help Pakistan but not as a coach

Numerous esteemed figures in Pakistani cricket, including Waqar, Younis Khan, and Mohammad Yousuf, have declined offers to join the national coaching staff. Misbah-ul-Haq assumed the role of coach but resigned shortly thereafter. Additionally, foreign coaches such as Gary Kirsten and Mickey Arthur have also faced challenges in this capacity, which underscores Akram's perspective on the matter.

While Akram may not be inclined to accept an official position, he has expressed his willingness to assist players and dedicate time to their development without any financial compensation.

"I am eager to support Pakistan cricket. There is no need for payment. I am available at no cost. Should you arrange a training camp and require my presence, I will attend. If you wish for me to engage with cricketers in preparation for a significant tournament, I am willing to do so. However, at 58 years of age, I am not prepared to endure the disrespect that has been shown. I cannot lead a life filled with stress at this stage of my life," he stated.
