Waqar Younis Fires Back at Mohammad Hafeez for Discrediting ‘90s Pakistan Stars
17 days ago | 5 Views
Waqar Younis has shared a somewhat enigmatic post highlighting the combined records of himself and Wasim Akram, two legends of fast bowling. His use of the phrase "90’s KA LONDA (Boys from the 1990's)" in uppercase suggests that this tweet may be a reaction to former Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez's remarks regarding the legacy of prominent players from that era.
In his post on X, Waqar included a photograph of himself alongside Wasim, accompanied by the aforementioned text. This development follows a disappointing performance by Pakistan in the 2025 Champions Trophy, marking the first significant cricket tournament hosted by the country in nearly thirty years. Throughout the two matches played against New Zealand and their long-standing rivals India, Pakistan appeared to struggle significantly, resulting in substantial defeats that led to their elimination from the tournament. Additionally, their final match against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi was abandoned due to rain.
What Mohammad Hafeez said…
Hafeez remarked that the prominent players who represented Pakistan in the 1990s did not leave a significant legacy for subsequent generations, as they were unable to secure any ICC trophies following their triumph in the 1992 World Cup. He expressed this sentiment during a discussion with former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, who was part of Pakistan's formidable fast bowling trio alongside Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis in the late 1990s.
"I hold great admiration for those who played in the 1990s; however, in terms of legacy, they did not contribute anything substantial for Pakistan. They failed to win an ICC event, suffering defeats in the World Cups of 1996, 1999, and 2003. We reached the final in 1999 but faced a heavy loss," Hafeez stated on OutSide Edge Live.
"While they were indeed superstars, they did not inspire us by clinching an ICC title. This led to a challenging period for us, culminating in our loss in the final of the T20 World Cup in 2007. It was only in 2009, under Younis Khan's leadership, that we found inspiration for the next generation by winning."
Shoaib later emphasized that Pakistan's dominant record against their arch-rivals India in ODI cricket is attributed to the victories achieved during the 1990s. "The 73 one-day matches that Pakistan won against India were secured by us," he asserted.
"Undoubtedly, there has been a strong legacy since Imran Khan's era, and remarkable cricket was played during that time," he added, to which Shoaib responded, "You cannot dismiss this now; the video has already been recorded, and you have discussed all the prominent players."
While no changes have been announced regarding the ODI team structure, Pakistan has appointed Salman Agha as the new captain of the T20I side, replacing Mohammad Rizwan. This marks the fourth change in T20I leadership since January of the previous year, with both Shaheen Afridi and Babar Azam having held the captaincy during this timeframe.
