Former head coach of the India women's cricket team, WV Raman, recounted a harrowing experience related to a near-fatal allergic reaction that followed a viral infection. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Raman, who previously played for Tamil Nadu, shared that a routine consultation with his physician in early January for a viral infection escalated into a life-threatening situation due to a severe allergic response.

The accomplished batter, who scored over 1,000 runs in 38 international matches for India, described experiencing chest congestion while en route to the hospital.

"Last Tuesday began with a visit to my general practitioner regarding a viral infection I was experiencing. He prescribed several medications, which I took about an hour later after a meal. However, two hours post-ingestion, I noticed hives starting to appear and spread across my body," Raman detailed in his X post.

"I contacted my doctor, who advised me to go to the hospital for an injection to counter a typical allergic reaction to medication or food. I might have overlooked or postponed this, but I felt an unusual surge of blood to my face. This was concerning, so I decided to drive to the hospital," he further explained.

Raman expressed his gratitude to the medical professionals for their role in his recovery and safety. He recounted how what began as a mild allergy escalated into an "anaphylactic shock."

"The 3 km journey was quite distressing. During the trip, I experienced some chest congestion. Upon arriving at the hospital, the doctor promptly administered the injection. As the procedures unfolded, I felt increasingly unwell," he noted.

"I informed the doctor that my condition was deteriorating despite the treatment. The situation rapidly worsened, and for approximately 45 to 60 seconds, I felt as though I was on the brink of death. I lost consciousness and regained it a few minutes later! What seemed like a minor allergy had resulted in an anaphylactic shock," he elaborated.

'Recovered perfectly'

WV Raman, recognized for identifying Ravichandran Ashwin in domestic cricket, has now confirmed his complete recovery, enabling him to participate in commentary for the recent women's ODI series between India and Ireland held in Rajkot from January 10 to 15.

"It takes just a moment, everyone, and life continuously presents challenges that can hinder you. Pay attention to the signs and heed the messages your body conveys. While luck and divine grace are undoubtedly important, it is essential to communicate any known allergies to your family, friends, and healthcare providers," Raman stated.
