Mumbai: The concluding match of the group stage in this season's Women’s Premier League featured two teams with markedly different trajectories. The Mumbai Indians had already secured their place in the playoffs and were aiming for a direct entry into the final. In contrast, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the reigning champions, were having a disappointing season and had only their pride at stake.

In a contest held at the Brabourne Stadium on Tuesday evening, Smriti Mandhana distinguished herself through her exceptional batting and leadership, guiding RCB to an 11-run victory. This outcome enabled the Delhi Capitals to secure a direct spot in the final, surpassing the Mumbai Indians on net run rate, as both teams concluded the group stage with 10 points. The Mumbai Indians are set to face the Gujarat Giants in the playoffs.

Mandhana excelled as she opened the innings for RCB, initially taking a few deliveries to acclimatize to the pitch conditions. Once she found her rhythm, she began executing a series of elegant yet aggressive strokes that swiftly reached the boundary, including a powerful six over the bowler's head.

Despite facing challenges with her form this season, the 28-year-old delivered a crucial performance in her team's final match, scoring a commendable 53 runs off 37 balls (including 6 fours and 3 sixes), which laid a solid foundation for the RCB innings. Following her departure, Ellyse Perry (49* off 38 balls) and Richa Ghosh (36 off 22) maintained the momentum with their aggressive batting, while Georgia Wareham's rapid 31 runs off just 10 balls propelled RCB to a total of 199/3.

Setting a substantial target was one aspect, but Mandhana also needed to execute her bowling changes effectively, which she successfully accomplished.

In the initial exchanges, Hayley Matthews exhibited a particularly aggressive demeanor, striking four boundaries in her 19 runs off 16 balls. In response, Mandhana opted to introduce Sneh Rana into the attack as early as the fourth over.

This strategic change proved effective, as Rana had Matthews caught at square leg with her third delivery. Just two overs later, she dismissed Amelia Kerr, resulting in the loss of both openers for Mumbai.

Natalie Sciver-Brunt and Mumbai's captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, began to stabilize the innings. However, a subsequent bowling change by RCB yielded results; Kim Garth returned to the attack and captured Kaur behind the stumps on her very first delivery of the 11th over. Another bowling adjustment in the 15th over led to the dismissal of Sciver-Brunt, who had scored 69 runs off 35 balls, courtesy of Perry.

As the pressure mounted on the scoreboard, Mumbai continued to lose wickets at regular intervals.

Although RCB concluded their campaign with a victory, the former champions, Mumbai, remain in contention for the title, albeit through a more challenging path.
