New Delhi: The aspirations of the Women’s Premier League for expansion and development are finally materializing. After being limited to Tier I cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru during its initial two editions, the tournament will now extend its reach to Tier II cities—Lucknow and Vadodara—in its third edition.
Moreover, this season marks a significant milestone as it will feature three Indian captains for the first time since the league's inception in 2023. Addressing previous criticisms regarding the lack of Indian leadership in its inaugural year, the tournament will showcase Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Deepti Sharma, highlighting the depth of leadership within the Indian cricket framework.
The inclusion of numerous U-19 players in this season's WPL introduces an exhilarating aspect. With talents such as U-19 T20 World Cup-winning captain Niki Prasad, wicket-keeper batter G Kamalini, pacers Shabnam Shakil and VJ Joshitha, as well as spinners Vaishnavi Sharma and Parunika Sisodia, the league is fulfilling its objective of providing Indian players with a broader platform, a larger audience, and opportunities for advancement.
The league continues to draw international stars, including Meg Lanning, Ashleigh Gardner, Hayley Matthews, Danielle Wyatt-Hodge, and Sophie Ecclestone. Following a tumultuous history, West Indies star Deandra Dottin will make her debut for Gujarat Giants, while Australian leg-spinner Alana King will enhance the already formidable spin attack of UP Warriorz after an impressive Ashes campaign.
"The growth and progress of so many players have been remarkable to witness. They have improved significantly due to the opportunities provided by the WPL," stated seven-time World Cup champion and DC captain Lanning during a pre-season press conference.
"For young girls, seeing what is achievable and understanding the pathway to play for franchises globally and for the national team is truly inspiring. It offers a tangible goal to strive for. Back home in Australia, the WPL is often discussed in a positive light."

Team-by-team breakdown
In the recent auction, Gujarat Giants captured attention by acquiring all-rounder Simran Shaikh as their highest-paid player for ₹1.90 Crore. This dynamic batter is anticipated to enhance the team's offensive capabilities, which have been lacking. However, a significant off-field change occurred with the departure of support staff members Mithali Raj and Nooshin Al Khadeer from the franchise. After finishing at the bottom of the standings in both previous editions, a strategic overhaul is now imperative. Gardner, appointed as the team leader for this season, is expected to rectify past shortcomings.
On the other hand, defending champions Royal Challengers Bangalore face challenges as several key players are sidelined due to injuries and personal matters. Nevertheless, they have retained the core of their title-winning squad and aim to leverage the confidence gained from last year’s remarkable performance.
The UP Warriorz, who will finally compete in front of a home crowd under the leadership of local star Deepti, have stressed the importance of evaluating their Indian players, particularly in the absence of Alyssa Healy. Their off-season activation program in Lucknow was designed to nurture grassroots talent and foster local connections. On the field, they require consistent contributions from domestic players to compete with the league's elite.
Having reached the finals in both previous seasons, Delhi Capitals possess a strategic advantage with Lanning as captain and a reliable squad. They will need to push for victory this year. With a well-rounded team comprising seasoned internationals and promising young talents, they hope that the third attempt will yield success.
As for the inaugural champions, Mumbai Indians, they boast the experience and resources to emerge as a formidable force once more. With some of the finest all-rounders in the game, they aim to overcome the disappointment of last year's Eliminator against RCB.
As the league grows and Indian talent continues to emerge, it will serve as an excellent precursor to the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, which India is scheduled to host later this year.
The league is set to commence on February 14, with the opening match taking place at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara. Following this, the competition will shift to the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on February 21, and then to the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on March 3. The concluding phase will occur at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, starting March 10, with the final match scheduled for March 15.
