WPL Controversy: Harmanpreet Kaur Faces BCCI Action After Clash with Ecclestone

A heated confrontation occurred between Mumbai Indians captain Harmanpreet Kaur and UP Warriorz’s Sophie Ecclestone during their Women’s Premier League (WPL) match on Thursday, prompting the on-field umpire to intervene and alleviate the rising tensions.

The altercation began at the conclusion of the 19th over when umpire Ajitesh Argal informed Harmanpreet that her team would be restricted to three fielders outside the circle in the final over due to a slow over rate. This ruling displeased the MI captain, resulting in a brief dispute with the umpire.

New Zealand all-rounder Amelia Kerr, visibly frustrated by the decision, joined the discussion in support of her captain.

As the exchange intensified, Ecclestone, positioned at the non-striker’s end, approached Argal to express her viewpoint. This action did not sit well with Harmanpreet, who responded with her own remarks.

The situation escalated rapidly until the umpires stepped in to ensure that the disagreement did not escalate further.

Watch:

Harmanpreet was ultimately sanctioned and fined 10 percent of her match fees for violating the WPL Code of Conduct. She acknowledged her involvement in a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8, which pertains to expressing dissent towards an umpire's decision during a match.

In spite of the verbal altercation, the Mumbai Indians remained focused and executed a commanding performance on the field. Hayley Matthews spearheaded the effort with an impressive 68 runs off 46 balls, while Kerr excelled with the ball, achieving a career-best figure of 5/38.

The former champions successfully chased down a target of 151 runs, clinching a six-wicket victory over the Warriorz and elevating themselves to second place in the points table. Conversely, the UP Warriorz find themselves on the brink of elimination, having suffered their third consecutive defeat.

Although Warriorz captain Deepti Sharma briefly uplifted her team's morale with a remarkable catch to dismiss Nat Sciver-Brunt (37 off 23), MI had already established a strong grip on the chase, largely due to Matthews' outstanding innings.

With eight points, the Mumbai Indians are now in a strong position and will face the Gujarat Giants in their next match on March 10.
