India, March 17 -- The nation has recently experienced remarkable success in chess, highlighted by D Gukesh's triumph at the World Championship in Singapore last year, where he emerged victorious against Ding Liren. Additionally, Koneru Humpy claimed the title of Women's World Rapid Champion.
In the latest live chess rankings, three Indian Grandmasters are positioned within the top ten: Gukesh ranks third, following Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura, who is in second place. Arjun Erigaisi holds the fifth position, while R Praggnanandhaa is ranked eighth.
Following an impressive performance at the Prague Masters, Aravindh Chithambaram made a significant leap, rising eight spots to become World No. 14. Conversely, the legendary Viswanathan Anand has slipped to 15th place.
In a recent interview with TV9 Telugu, Anand shared his thoughts on India's emerging Grandmasters, including Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa, and Arjun.
"In certain respects, we are already a chess superpower. Various metrics support this claim. While we may not be as dominant as the Soviet Union once was, consider the ages of our top players, excluding myself; the oldest among them is just 21," he remarked.
"They are all exceptionally young, which indicates they have many years ahead of them. Furthermore, they are all ranked within the top 10, 20, or even 50, and this number continues to grow. The fact that they are all competing together is remarkable for us, as they will not only strive for the best outcomes, but when one achieves a notable result, it will inspire the others to keep pace. This creates a wonderful blend of camaraderie and competition," he added.
Additionally, Nihal Sarin has recently advanced two positions in the rankings, now standing at World No. 41. Meanwhile, Vidit Gujrathi is ranked 24th, and Harikrishna Pentala is in 30th place.
